So we just got hit by a mountain thunderstorm, and we got soggy. Included is a picture of my dad desperately trying to dig a ditch to try and divert the rain water away from his tent. :D

Since most our family is on this trip, we decided to shack up with the other family in town while the storm blows over... Especially since we didn't have access to cell service.

The weather is acting oddly right now. There are thunder cells with pink lightning flashing from them. Never quite seen anything like it before.

I'll also include a picture of my tent covered in hail, and some weird sun/cloud shadows cast on the environment between the storm cells.

Also keep in mind that this is a dry pine semi arid environment... There were no puddles before this thing started. How odd!

It was really cool seeing the pink lightning flashing over Ellensburg valley on our descent over the hills. :)

I love this unseasonable rainy weather but then again, I am in my computer room listening to the rain coming down. It really poured rain here in Olympia today. It felt like late fall or winter, not spring.

Thanks for the photos... In spite of the sogginess it still sounds like a lot more fun than I have been having with various and sundry posters today. :(

Where you were camped looks beautiful. Even with rain.

It was just hot and muggy here today. It has still been nice enough to get out and hike.

If they do not get out of hand, I rather like listening to the rain come down during a storm.

Nothing fills me with life and joy as much as a good thunderstorm. Always used to go out driving in the daytime ones in hopes of getting better looks at it(easier to see them outside of the city), but we haven't gotten much for storms in the area in recent years. They always go a bit too far north, or a bit too far south. :(

That is one thing I do miss about the MidWest. It has some great thunderstorms. Here I've only seen a few since I've been here. And they aren't big, they aren't booming and loud, they won't shake and rattle the house, they won't light up the sky, and there are no torrents of rain (it sometimes just gets hard enough to have a soothing sound pattering on the roof, but not often) (but that's not necessarily a bad thing here because it doesn't take much to cause flooding). And definitely won't be having the sudden drop in temperate that tells you to batten down the watches and grab your camera.

True enough! I guess I look at this trip as time spent with my family more than a test against the elements, though. Maybe when I go on a section hike. :D

Test against the elements? I'm telling Mother you said that hurtful, mean thing about her workings to make things happen and it being tested against her rather than being in harmony with her.:p

Thunder means lightening. Ever been struck by lightening? I have been, twice.
I'll settle for wind and rain.

You ain't a camper if you ain't been rained out. We no longer camp, but I've had a few experiences. At one time I'd take my class of Grade 6's on a year end overnight trip. We booked a group camping site at a provincial park. I didn't give a lot of guidance, as it was more fun to just watch them enjoy life. Inevitably, some tent groups would choose a low spot on the ground because it had a nesting feel to it. One year it absolutely poured at around 1 AM. Most had yet to go to sleep. I heard all the commotion, (Mr. _________, there's a river in our tent!") and many headed to the shelter (thank goodness we had one) for the night. We'd head home at noon the following day, and about half of them would be sleeping by the time we arrived at the school.

I have more than a few of those types of experiences, both as the kid and as the adult. What may not have been considered joyful at the time, there always seems to be such joy in the retelling and shared reminiscence of camping adversities.

I remember camping and thunderstorms. Growing up we were always told what not to do during a thunderstorm; don't go near the water, or under trees, or near metal, and here I am by the lake, in the woods, with a metal trailer. But that wasn't as scary as in a boat watching the storm coming and trying to stay ahead of it.

It really is! We are all heading back up there in a bit. Our reservations end today, so we will be heading over to the last spot on our trip at La Wis Wis. It's even more gorgeous out there. Much more green and heavily forested like what I'm used to. :D

We originally were going to Oregon and California for this trip, but due to my grandma's health we decided to go to places that were much more nearby. It's still been a fun and memorable trip, though! :)

For sure. I've had some of those kids see me 15 years later and tell me it was their favorite part of the entire year.
