I don't think you're behaving skeptically in this case. You think that resisting the perpetual bull **** that politicians and the media spew at us on a daily basis is resisting a phantom? I say it's resisting something very, very real - and more sinister than even skeptics like me can truly grasp.
I don't think you're behaving skeptically in this case.
- what is the actual effect that the Fukushima incident is going to have on you? Can you give actual numbers for, say, percent change in radiation exposure? Do you have anything more than a nuclear boogeyman to justify your response? Have your decisions been based on logical inferences from real evidence?
- are your actions proportional? Do you treat non-nuclear risks with the same level of caution (or paranoia) that you apply to this? Note that part of this question involves you having some idea of the actual level of risk that Fukushima presents for you.
- are your actions consistent? For instance, if you think that your increased radiation dosage because of Fukushima is enough to make you take KI pills now, did you take them in the past when you knew you would be exposed to similar doses of radiation... for instance, when you would take a cross-country airline flight?
The increase in background radiation for you from Fukushima is somewhat less than the difference in background radiation between a wood building and one made of concrete or brick (due to the naturally-occurring low levels of radioactive material in the rock used). You say you sent KI pills to your family; have you also advised them to check the type of buildings where they live and work, and either move or get a new job if they find they're living or working in a brick or concrete building?
Edit: it's common for people to improperly assign more or less risk to potential threats based on whether they're spectacular or mundane: parents who don't make their kids wear bike helmets will go crazy worrying about school snipers. So far, it seems to me that your response to the Fukushima incident has been based more on that sort of thinking than a careful examination of the facts.
Besides that, if all hell breaks loose, I can probably sell this stuff for quite a profit!
1- lets consider that perhaps [thermonuclear] hell has aleady broken loose ?
2- potassium iodide [or kelp] offers no protection from the plutonium kind of radiation from japan
but most people are so uninformed on this that you could sell it
... like selling parsely to a kid looking for his first marijuana cigarette
pretty easy
and useless
Potassium iodide only protects the thyroid against thyroid cancer caused by exposure to radiation..
your pills offer ZERO protection against japan radiation
MOX fuel is a mixture of plutonium with uranium. In fact, the "M" stands for "mixed".NO!
it does NOT !
u missed the point
japan uses MOX rods PLUTONIUM
"Japan radiation"? :sarcasticPotassium iodide and kelp are USELESS against this KIND of radiation
thats what i posted
u missed it completely
as has the whole public
your pills offer ZERO protection against japan radiation
You're right in one respect: 7he4uthor is wrong when he says that KI pills won't help against "Japan radiation". When they're administered to someone who's actually affected by a release of radioactive material, they do help. Not according to my research.
In fact, the only sources I could find that DID agree with your statement were what I would call "highly suspect." (And in fact, I only found one.)
If you have some credible sources, please post them.
Of course, I do realize that potassium iodide doesn't offer protection from all the effects of radiation poisoning. It only protects the thyroid - but thyroid cancer is very common after radiation poisoning.
Besides that, I am not taking potassium iodide just because of the crisis in Japan. I am also concerned about the possibility of a serious earthquake on our West Coast, which could compromise the nuclear power plants in that area. I want to be prepared for that scenario as well.
So - I do not believe that I've wasted my $50.
