Quiz - which Canadian political party most closely matches your views?

Mine,
1st Green
2nd NDP
3rd Conservative / Liberal

Have to admit, the "Green" surprised the heck out of me. I did played at some fundraisers for them in the last election which put me off them for life. One of the candidates delivered a speech that mostly consisted of angrily shouting "STOP RAPING YOUR MOTHER!" over and over again, and at another one - a cabaret - they didn't even bother to arrange a sound system. That might not sound particularly relevant now, but in my view at the time I thought, if they can't organize a bleeding cabaret in a little bar in Montreal, how could they possibly organize my country? Also at that time I did a CBC quiz and ranked 100% NDP and zero percent anything else.

I'm happy to see Harper is not likely to get his coveted majority any more. The man's a menace.

I don't know why, but for some reason, that mental image reminded me of Hydrozilla, a guy in a lizard costume, wrapped in electrical cords, devouring wallets:

In November 2002, however, [Ontario Minister of Energy John Baird] was followed around the province by "Hydrozilla", a man in a giant lizard suit sent by the NDP as a stunt to show that deregulating electricity rates would create an economic monster for consumers.

and at another one - a cabaret - they didn't even bother to arrange a sound system. The last election... as in 2006? It seemed to me like they got their organizational act together around the time that Jim Harris became leader in 2003.

This is odd because I normally vote Liberal federally, but this time out I will definitely be voting for Harpo. (Ok, I have to hold my nose to do it, but no one else is ready for prime time.)

All I have to say is, "huh?" How did Harpo get snuggled in between the greens and the socialists? Ah well, I guess I should just vote for the Marijuana Party or the Communist Party of Canada. Are the Rhinoceros Party running this year?

Oh, god, no, not Harper. Anyone but Harper! A Harper majority is a danger if McCain-Palin somehow pull off the US election thing - they will start more wars, and Harper will commit Canadian troops. He's an unrepentant neo-con fanboy! Nooooo!

*phew*. [/rant]

Seriously, vote for whoever you like. It's looking like Obama will win down south, so Harper's strange, sick, personal ambition to force Canada to be a sidekick to the world's top aggressor will be neutered for the time being.

Get a hold of yourself, lol. The problem, as I see it, is that the Greens have no business running the government whatsover. I remember what the NDP did to my province when we were foolish enough to elect them (I did vote for them too) and so I cannot bring myself to vote for Layton. My beloved Liberals have had the incoherent judgment to install St. Stephan as their leader and I think his green plan is absolutely nuttier than a fruitcake... so, no vote there either. By default, that leaves.... Harpo. *shiver* I only pray that Saint Obama is not coronated down south.

Hmm.

For me, my vote is more than about leadership. The way I see it, I think two things that will affect my voting strategy are pretty certain:

- The Conservatives will win again, probably with a minority.
- In my riding, the Conservative candidate is pretty much a lock.

I don't personally think my vote will affect which party leader will become Prime Minister. I don't even think my vote will affect who is elected as my MP.

Therefore, I see my vote as an opportunity to express in a small way as part of the popular vote what the will of the people is. I don't hold any illusions that my vote will affect the outcome of the election directly, so I need to find some other way to put it to use. I think that using it to call attention to issues that I care about is probably the best that I can hope for.

So... to me, the leader of the party is secondary.

Though I do see what you mean to a degree about the parties' record at the provincial level. I remember the so-called "Common Sense Revolution" too well to vote for any Conservative candidate who had a hand in it, just on principle.

Hehe, yeah, that is why I said I am holding my nose. Otoh, I am still ticked over the Liberals corruption and their leader is simply the icing on the cake. I would actually like to see the NDP become the official opposition.

I see you are from the Toronto area. It is so strange to have the election results, the second the polls close in BC, announced on national TV. It doesn't really matter how anyone west of the Ontario border votes as all elections, to date, have been decided "back east".

Well... kinda. When they call the election, it's based partly on having a large enough sample, which they probably get by the time the polls close in Nova Scotia, and partly on their prediction of how the votes that haven't yet come in; realistically, there are only a few ridings in each province that can swing from one party to another.

If you put more ridings in play in B.C. and got Alberta to be something other than solid Tory blue, then the networks might wait a bit before calling the winner. ;)

Hey, now - I'm from the riding in Calgary that got a liberal in last time around...

There was a Calgary riding that elected a Liberal? When?

From what I can find, it looks like every Alberta riding in this election has a Conservative incumbent. Was there a by-election since the last general election that I'm missing?

Really? I was going by what my mum told me. Maybe she only said she voted Liberal. I was in Montreal at the time. Stupid Calgary! Why must it be so predictable?

I know nothing about Canadian politics really, but here's what I got.

2. Greens
3. Liberals

As a sucker for reading anything about politics in general from the Anglosphere and European Union, I'm probably better informed of Canadian politics than most Americans. On things I didn't know off the top of my head, I guessed.

1. New Democrats
2. Liberals/Bloc
3. Conservatives/Greens

I've kinda always suspected if I were Canadian I'd be a New Democrat, but not living in Canada, never been sure.
