To me it implies that they were seeing something different from themselves. Maybe it is just in how I read it, but if I were writing about one man thinking women were pretty, I would not say that he thought the daughters of men were pretty.

I see your point. It does make the phrase a bit awkward to say it that way. But you have to remember that this was written in a different language, in a time and place of a different culture and writing style than what we are used to today.
