Question about Noah

The Lost One
kimberlee said:
well isn't it true and scientific that the continents were all together at one point then broke up? well according to the bible the water did go down some and the ark ended up on a peice of land so maybe that was the start to the first continent that later split into several over time.

Excuse me, kimberlee, but are you saying the earth's continent began to split when the flood happened, at mere 4100-4300 years ago?

I lived in australia. and australia is a continent, and from what I recall, it is moving (drifting) a little less than 1 inch a year (give or take a quarter of an inch for margin of error).

Do you know just how long it take before it can complete just one single mile?

How's your basic maths skill?

Let me help you. 1 mile equals 1760 yards, and a single yard equals 3 feet, so a yard is also equals 36 inches.

Now multiply 1750 by 36 inches, and you'll get 63,360 inches for 1 mile only.

That means for Australia to even cover one mile, it will take 63,360 years!!!!!

(And remember that Australian continent is moving less than an year, so it will actually take even longer to cover a mile, but I had rounded it up for you to 1 inch, so to make it easier for you to see.)

Do you know many miles Australia would have cover in 1 million years?

Compare that with the biblical 4100-4300 years with 63,360 years, then you will understand how ridiculous your claim is.

15.8 miles. 15.8 mile in 1 million years.

I don't remember how many length the other continents cover in a single year, but I suspect it is less than an inch.

Do you know how far Australia from the nearest continent right now (which is Antarctica)?

Australia was joined to Antarctica once. So today, Australia and the Antarctica is 4,359 miles apart. Australia and Antarctica didn't break away from each until about 40 million years ago. Man didn't exist then. Except for crocodiles, most modern species of animals didn't exist that far back in time. (The crocodiles are the only animals that haven't evolve much since the time of dinosaurs.)

And darkendless is far more correct than you claim, that it would take hundreds of millions of year (400,000,000 years) for any split to occur. But the continents did split from each other at the same time, because as I said before Australia and Antarctica broke away about 40 million years ago.

And according to the most optimistic calculation, Adam and Eve was created about 1656 years before the Flood happen, so less than 6000 years ago.

And consider this. Australia is said to be joined to the Antarctica before the split. And the Antarctica would have been join to India and Africa. If we are to believe in your claim about the split during the bible's flood. Then animals would have to migrate to Australia from Africa, by travelling through the Antarctica or through India and then Antarctica before Australia?

So why are there no fossils in Antarctica that would show such migration? And why are there no fossils of humans in Antarctica before modern history.

There have been ancestors of the Australian native aborigines living in the Australia, at the very least, 40,000 years ago. Let's face it Australia is not a land fill with high mountains. But if we are to believe the bible, then Australia would have cover by flood, and every living creature, including humans would have died out 4200 years ago.

So are the Australian aborigines descendants of Noah?

The Genesis is nothing but a myth, and it can't take into consideration of how long it take for continents to drift, nor how long ago humans had existed.

Even if Australia was to move 1 foot a year, or 1 yard a year, it would take Australia 5280 years or 1760 years, respectively, to drift in a single year. So your claim would still be ridiculous.

yeah and you don't know how long ago that was.... ummmm yeah no human is smart enough or can make a machine that's smart enough to know everything.... if science knows when the earth was created and how and how humans come from monkeys and how this earth has been around for millions and billions of years and oh wait we still don't have a cure for cancer.... yeah right! plus i believe we do have the cure for cancer we will just loose a lot of money if it came out and if they will lie about that they will lie about how old the earth is and all that. you think it's crazy to believe in God but look at the crazy ***** humans and science have come up with. i don't know where all the water went. who does. only God would know that. he put it there in the first place he can take it away.

Oh jesus, ok here we go;

Ok..... if you live in a house i suggest you never go back inside. If i am wrong about aging the earth it means my geology is poor which means foundations designed by people in my field are unsafe and buildings should be falling down left right and center but they're not. Geology is science, it has been tried and tried again. Geology allows people who design buildings and specifically foundations for buildings an idea about the strength properties of soil anc the rocks below the ground. An example:

If you're building a highway over pass in dirt that expands and contracts when it gets wet you have to take precautions or the concrete will break because it moves with the dirt and concrete doesn't like to move much (easy yes?).

I do'nt know if you've ever seen construction works on buildings that are higher than 4 or 5 stories (building codes are different in the USA) but they will always dig random holes (usually 5 or 6 because these holes cos about $5000 US to dig and anaylze) to make sure that the soil is suitable.

Now if geologists and geotechnical engineers are wrong about the way in which they date rock strata and soil sediment layers which is useful for determining the approximate strength under shear as well as a variety of other properties including Acid Sulphate Potential (ASP eats concrete which is really bad), we have some trouble.

Do you see what im saying here? I'm saying if your claims are right and scientists and engineers are wrong, then why do they design safe buildings 999 times out of 1000? Its not luck its science, and precise science and you know it but can't admit it.

yeah.... ok. sorry i'm not a geologist... i'm just presenting a thought. just asking if scientist know the age of the earth and they can't find the cure for cancer then they have a problem. and NO they don't know the earth is billions of years old (my belief) flaud technology. that's just what i think. i don't think we came from monkeys, i don't believe the big bang theory, i don't think the earth a been around for BILLIONS of years, i don't think that humans started as one cell. sorry just don't believe that.

I think you don't believe in all these things because you don't understand them. So it is much about understanding than belief.

In any case, you don't need to believe any of the things you have mentioned, because they are not important. You can live your life any way you like, day by day, and these things are not essential. After all science is not for everyone. People have different wants and needs.

Unless you think that one day, you become curious, and want to explore science. Then good for you. If you are not interest, then just please don't expect us at your bible or whatever you believe to be real.

I don't know what's important to you. For me, I don't believe in the Genesis, because there are evidences out there, which support that man existed long before the supposed creation of Adam. There are no physical or geological evidences of global flood, which the Genesis supposed narrated. And there's no evidence to support that Egypt kept a large group of Hebrew slaves that left suddenly after some plagues. Nor is there evidences to support Jesus' miracles and resurrection, beyond the gospels. Most important of all, there's nothing today, beyond faith (if not delusion) that indicate that support the existence of superior divine being, who call himself "god". The evidences that support a god is about much as fairy godmother, or ghouls and goblins, which is nonexistence.

If we are told, that everyone on earth was destroyed, that would include all the diversity in races.
Noah his wife, and children and their wives, we are in a situation that each of those spouses perhaps made up the ethnic diversity needed for the diversity we have today.

For example, if Noah only went onto the ark with white people, there is no way black people would have been possible.

This scenario of a world wide flood as opposed to a local flood would therefor have to be a miracle.

I thought of this diversity issue last night and thought you all might think it is interesting.

(Yes I already know all the problems with storing bacteria, and all the animals, but thought this was a more simple way to examine the issue of a world wide flood.

No...What's interesting is after you came to this 'realization'.... you haven't denounced your belief in these silly stories. Are you prepared to do that? The creation and flood story are myths (see Enuma Elish, Epic of Gilgamesh). So...since the creation is a myth and the flood is a myth...maybe....just maybe the story of a crucified messiah, whose genealogy has been directly linked to characters in both of these mythical stories (Genesis and Noah's Flood), is a myth as well....

Yes, the whole cancer thing is rather annoying because your all powerful god need only wish it away.

Wonder what he is waiting for....?

You're throwing this word "believe" around a lot. As someone who follows methods which yield consistently similar results i don't need to believe.

What do don't believe in us unimportant, you have just proved yourself a scientific illiterate. There is nothing to believe, maybe if you educated yourself you would understand but i don't expect that of you. A life of scientific fulfilment is not for everyone.

There is nothing to believe about science. Geology and medicine are completely different things. If you think that science is flawed because we can date the earth but can't cure cancer than you are dangerously (to society) under-educated in science. If you don't believe it fine, just don't expect people to give you any credit for your fairytale theories, and don't expect your claims to be accepted instead of attacked.

The problem with asserting what you did was that you asserted it under complete ignorance for the topic. I do not discuss Judaism because i have no idea about it so i do not make claims about it.

What is there to believe about anything unless there is no science to back it up? Tom Robbins said, "The halmark of a truly free man is to not believe in anything" and I believe him.

People get beliefs mixed up with faith, hope, expectation and need but what is there to believe in? The power of human nature? Ghosts? Me? Technology? A god? Belief is subjective and has no true meaning.

So if I parse your gibberish correctly, your main contention would be that science does not work? And we should all go back to a primitive, superstitious world view? That would be a better way to learn about the world, in your opinion?

no, most of science does work and is proven but i'm just saying... that not all of it does. not for me. maybe for you which is fine but not for me. i'm not saying that all of it doesn't work. i was just pointing out that people think it's so strange to believe in a God... well i think it's equally as strange to believe the earth is billions of years old or that we came from monkeys and so on. so either way it sounds a bit far fetched but like i said that's just me. i'm done with this cause it feels like i'm goin around in circles with you guys and it's gotten off topic.

no, most of science does work and is proven

Depends on what you're talking about. Science is much broader than "science"....

but i'm just saying... that not all of it does. not for me. maybe for you which is fine but not for me.

Actually it does. I can give you things that are specific to various fields of science that does work for you. Argue all you will about evolution but this is what biology deals with. The same understanding of evolution is in effect when dealing with influenza. Every year millions get their shot to combat it. When a new strain is discovered "scientist" are back to the lab using their previous knowledge of viruses to build a new vaccine. 3M doesn't make the products..they make them better. Computers have increased in speed in a very short time, increased their storage capacity while at the same time...decreased their size and have become mobile....There are more and more sciences that work and work for you but you've become so accustomed to them that you don't even realize how science benefits you....Even when it come to "evolution"....

i'm not saying that all of it doesn't work. i was just pointing out that people think it's so strange to believe in a God...

I agree.....Given what we know about the natural world through the scientific method I do find it strange that people still believe in these fairy-tales....And there's SO many of them....Which ones are true and which ones are false and how do we determine which one is the correct one...?...I assume you're going to say faith...And if you are then this is where we separate...There's no way to test your hypothesis (belief in a god and that it exist)...so you will in no doubt employ circular reasoning..convincing no one of its existence but yourself.

well i think it's equally as strange to believe the earth is billions of years old

Despite that all the "testable" data (evidence) points in that direction by various geologist over a long period of time....? Are you serious?

or that we came from monkeys

If that's what scientist believed then you'd have a point but no scientist that I know of say we came from monkeys. This is why it is so important to go and get an understanding of what evolution says. Here you go... (Evolution 101).

so either way it sounds a bit far fetched but like i said that's just me.

Yes. It's just you and every other closed minded person like you. Evolution has absolutely nothing to do with gods and if they exist let alone be creators. For some strange reason some theist can't seem to get beyond that fact and become defensive because they believe evolution is an attempt to undermined their dogmatic beliefs.....and it's not...

i'm done with this cause it feels like i'm goin around in circles with you guys and it's gotten off topic.

I had so hoped you'd click some of the links that I and others have provided...oh well.. I will just say..In the future be careful joining a debate if you don't want to "debate"....
