There's nothing one way or the other.

Personally I think it can be helpful for some people in a therapeutic situation but that's just my personal view.

Is it just a demonstration, or can it be therapeutic?

There has been some studies for a therapeutic use for hypnosis in psychology to treat certain disorders like anxiety or PTSD, but also for minor pain relief. It seems that yes, hypnosis could have some interesting medical and therapeutic uses though it remains rather limited. I hope those few resources help.
