It sickens me that some people consider their version of a god more important than their family, even their children. If a god does exist, it shouldn't be so far up its one rear end that it expects to come first and be worshipped. No one or thing is worthy of worship, especially not the Biblical god if the things stated in that book about it are true.

Overly enthusiastic fans of anything can get pretty goofy really fast. Religion isnt alone in this. Although there does appear to be those in religion hell bent on perfecting goofed and spreading to all corners of the planet like a divine calling. Like Amway but even crazier. RF is a crazy magnet. I am not sure what that says about me though!!!! I am crazy? I find crazy attractive? Is that crazy in and of itself? Lol.

Totally wrapped up into a social commemtary of a variety of wriers and fans!! Its no different than religion. What are the writers? Theologians. What is the fan base but reading theogians and bantering about the celebreties. Its identical except for the clothing is all.

It is all in their heads, so they are putting themselves first.

It is when they force it on others with threats if they don't convert, which does my head in.

It sickens you that others have different cultures or values from you? o_O

If a person prioritizes devotion to the gods, this does not mean that god expects to come first or be worshiped. Frankly, it doesn't mean lacking devotion to family or children either. Depending on what gods one worships, prioritizing devotion to family or children would actually be an expression of worshiping one's gods.

Well, as a polytheist I'd obviously agree there is no singular thing worthy of worship at the exclusion of all else. But for those who feel differently, such is their way of life and they have their right to it.

I especially didn't like the story of Isaac.

I think worship is actually the highest form of love and the Creator God who sustains our lives down to each breath and heartbeat is worthy of such love and gratefulness. I find putting God first means being able to love others; family and friends much better. I can simply love and enjoy them without thinking they must meet my expectations, satisfy or fulfill me because God's love does that.

Sounds as if you are trying to put two different things first.

AND btw, the suggestion that your "love" for
your imaginary god somehow makes you more
loving toward your family than those who are not
in your cult is way off base.

I don't find your response very clear.

I'm not in a cult, btw.
I was not talking about only loving others who think or believe as I do.

Is all in how one defines a cult.
From outside, Christianity looks pretty weird.

    You DID say this-

I find putting God first means being able to love others; family and friends much better.

Does everyone need to put "god"
first in order to be able to properly love
their family? Or is it just you?

The very fact that a religion would prioritize a non-existent God over their own families and friends should be a major red flag that it's a potential recipe for disaster.

People can become addicted to all sorts of things, not the least of which can be their own presumed righteousness. When one has been taught to fear being 'wrong', and their egos have been allowed free reign in protecting them from such a realization; being 'right' becomes very, very important, and thereby a very euphoric state when 'achieved' (real or imagined). Hence, the possibility of it becoming addictive. And as we see with all forms of addiction, the addict will sacrifice everything and everyone they love to maintain the 'high'. Addiction by itself is difficult enough to overcome, but addiction fueled by ego is nearly impossible.

Exactly! And the “Abrahamic God”, Jehovah, requires this! (In addition to loving others.)

    Great point!

It's not surprising that from the outside Christianity looks weird. I really wouldn't expect otherwise....Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him (1 John 3:1).

Besides, sadly there are many things done in the name of Christianity which are pretty weird.

I actually think that everyone would benefit and would love others better by putting God first. I don't expect you to understand or agree with this though.

I've never found such a culture. Not on this world, and not in any imaginings.

Then again, I'm very mindful of the fact that assessing some culture as "sickening" and "reprehensible" only says something about me and my values, and thus illuminates nothing about the culture I am judging.

You should probably just stop right there. People do not worship gods that are "non-existent" to them. It is non-existend to you, not to them. Your outsider judgements only speak to your own biases and values.
