YouTube - GOD- john Lennon

Before I heard this song for the first time I kept hearing a number of my friends talk about generalized spirituality and linking it to John Lennon. This song in which Lennon just marks off one belief after another that he doesn't hold to; Jesus, Kennedy, gita, mantra, yoga, kings, Beatles, etc. but just "Yoko and me" really resonates with me.

Just believe in me.

Be yourself. The dream is over and now there's reality. No more idealism.

Now Lennon is not someone that would probably be classified as atheistic by today's standards and perhaps pantheistic it still seems relevant that looking inside and within each other is far more important than looking elsewhere.

Stained glass windows keep the cold outside
While the hypocrites hide inside
With the lies of statues in their minds
Where the Christian religion made them blind
Where they hide
And prey to the God of a ***** spelled backwards is dog
Not for one race, one creed, one world
But for money
Effective
Absurd

Do you pray to the Holy Ghost when you suck your host
Do you read who’s dead in the Irish Post
Do you give away the cash you can’t afford
On bended knees and pray to lord

Fat pig priest
Sanctimonious smiles
He takes the money
You take the lies
This is religion and Jesus Christ
This is religion cheaply priced
This is bibles full of libel
This is sin in eternal hymn
This is what they’ve done
This is your religion
The apostles were eleven
Now there’s a sod in Heaven

This is religion
There’s a liar on the altar
The sermon never falter
This is religion
Your religion

We call the heartland not very smart land, IQ's are very low but threat levels are high
They got a mandate, they don't want man-dates, they got so many hates and people to despise

In the dust bowl, cerebral black hole, the average weight is well over 200 pounds
I hate to generalize, but have you seen the thighs, most haven't seen their genitalia in a while

Maybe that's why they're so scared of us
We've concerns other than fear and hunger pangs

Queers, transgends, and lesbians, vegans and vegetarians
All you brownish red and yellow ones come and join us on the coast

No longer svelte, they gotta punch new holes in the Bible belt
They've blown out the fire under the melting pot, the red blood of America is starting to clot
No compromise, no sight through others' eyes, they're just flies spreading pieces of ****
You gotta emigrate, stop living in hate, what makes this country great is dwelling on either side

They don't want visitors in Jesusland
They want life canned and bland in the fatherland

We want people with college degrees, drug use experience and STD's
People with open-minded philosophies, come hug California trees
Cultural revolution now, neo-conservatives run outta town
We're gonna burn Orange County down,
And then we're off to Riverside, Bakersfield and Fresno too, then we're coming after you

The fear stricken, born again Christian, they got a vision a homogenized state
Textbook decline, Intelligent Design
They wan't to memorize but don't want you to think

They don't want visitors in Jesusland
They want life canned and bland in the fatherland

Punk Rockers and emo kids, people doing things the church forbids
Buddhists, agnostics, and atheists we're moving out of jesusland
Art students and thespians, excluding country, all the musicians
We want all hookers and comedians, nihilists are welcome too

No longer svelte, they gotta punch new holes in the Bible belt

Definately Pro Secular, :D

Lyrics to Reverend Black Grape :
Hey,
you know what I mean?

Sellin' him your religion
Say I walking down a hit song
A booming business
Buying, selling belief
Standing in the pews
Talking ball ****, ball ****, ball ****,
ball ****, ball ****
I want to know, I want to know,
Can you feel the sprit of the lord?

[Ryder]
There's nothing more sinister
as ministers in dresses
Gather round some nice black people
While I deliver this message
Kill the message

you do nothing but socialise
and become a menace
put on your reboks man
and go play funky tennis

can I get a witness
I said can, I get a witness

Oh come oh ye faithful
Oh joyful and triumphant
Gather around,
While I blow my own trumpet

Oh Pope he got the Nazis
To clean up their messes
He exchanged the gold and paintings
He gave them new addresses
Clean up your messes

Hi, hi furer
Hi, hi furer

Oh my fathers, fathers, fathers, father
By nature he was bendy
We are the chi chine tribe
and we are over friendly

can I get a witness
yeah
I said
Come on
can, I get a witness

Oh come oh ye faithful
Oh joyful and triumphant
Gather around me,
while I blow my own trumpet

Can I get a witness?

[spoken]
Poppycock.
for what we are about to receive
would he agree a stately minuet would be preferable to a rain dance

Hey there bothers and sisters
Hang in there
Yeah

Oh come oh ye faithful
Oh joyful and triumphant
Gather around,
While I blow my own trumpet

Oh come oh ye faithful
You're so joyful and triumphant
Gather around,
While I blow my own trumpet

I want to know
I want to know
I want to know
I want to know
can you feel
I said
can you feel
can you feel
the sprit of the lord

Oh come oh ye faithful,
Oh joyful and triumphant,
Gather around,
While I blow my own trumpet

can you feel the sprit of the lord?
can you feel the sprit of the lord?

I don’t recall any specifically pro-atheist music (although Christians say Wagner’s Ring is) but the Vissi d’Arte from Tosca certainly speaks of the failure of “faith” to aid in a truly horrific situation. I often put this version on when Christians become to boastful.

Madam Kabaivanska is not the best Tosca musically but she gets extra points for doing the whole aria while on the floor. Try to imagine Price or Sills doing that!!

Here. Enjoy

I have one I heard by Frank Zappa (apologies if anyone has already posted this one)

Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk

Theres an ugly little wasel bout three-foot nine
Face puffed up from cryin n lyin
cause her sweet little hubbys
Suckin prong part time
(in the name of the lord)

Get a clue, little shrew
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Jesus thinks youre a jerk

Did he really choose tammy to do his work?
Robertson says that hes the one
Oh he sure is,
If armageddon
Is your idea of family fun,
An hes got some planned for you!
(now, tell me that aint true)

Now, what if jimbos slightly gay,
Will pat let jimbo get away?
Everything weve heard him say
Indicated that jim must pay,
(and it just might hurt a bit)
But keep that money rollin in,
cause pat and naughty jimbo
Cant get enough of it

Perhaps its their idea
Of an affirmative action plan
To give white trash a special break;
Well, they took those jeezo-bucks and ran
To the bank! to the bank! to the bank! to the bank!
And every night we can hear them thank
Their buddy, up above
For sending down his love
(while you all smell the glove)

Jim and pat should take a pole
(right up each saintly glory-hole),
With tar and feathers too --
Just like theyd love to do to you

(cause they think you are bad --
And they are very mad)

cause some folks dont want prayer in school!

(wed need an ark to survive the drool
Of micro-publicans, raised on hate,
And jimbo-jimbo when they graduate)

Conviced they are the chosen ones --
And all their parents carry guns,
And hold them cards in the n.r.a.
(with their fingers on the triggers
When they kneel and pray)

With a ku-klux muu-muu
In the back of the truck,
If you aint born again,
They wanna mess you up, screamin:
no abortion, no-siree!
lifes too precious, cant you see!
(whats that hangin from the neighbors tree?
Why, it looks like colored folks to me --
Would they do that...seriously? )

Imagine if you will
A multi-millionaire television evangelist,
Saved from korean combat duty by his father, a u.s. senator

Studied law --
But is not qualified to practice it

Father of a love child
Who, in adulthood, hosts the remnants
Of papas religious propaganda program

Claims not to be a faith healer,
But has, in the past,
Dealt stearnly with everything from hemorrhoids to hurricanes

Involved with funding for a secret war in central america
Claiming ronald reagan and oliver north as close friends

Involved in suspicous tax-avoidance schemes,
(under investigation for 16 months by the i.r.s.)

Claims to be a man of god;
Currenty seeking the united states presidency,
Hoping we will all follow him into --
The twilight zone

What if pat gets in the white house,
And suddenly --
The rights of certain people disappear
Mysteriously?

Now, wouldnt that sort of qualify
As an american tragedy?
(especially if he covers it up, sayin
jesus told it to me!)

I hope we never see that day,
In the land of the free --
Or someday will we?
Will we?

And if you dont know by now,
The truth of what Im tellin you,
Then, surely I have failed somehow --

And jesus will think Im a jerk, just like you --
If you let those tv preachers
Make a monkey out of you!

I said:
jesus will think youre a jerk
And it would be true!

Theres an old rugged cross
In the land of cutton --
Its still burnin on somebodys lawn
And it still smells rotten

Jim and tammy!
Oh, baby!
You gotta go!
You really got to go!

I like this song :-D

These are all very good, but I've noticed that the majority of them (with "Imagine" and maybe one or two others an exception) take a stance of denial of theism rather than a positive affirmation of atheism/secularism.

How do you positively affirm the lack of a thing  Ours is the best no god ever?

What I was (badly) trying to say is that there seemed to be a general anger and frustration in most of the music listed. Imagine, however, is life-affirming, and I was wondering if there were any other examples of joyful atheistic music out there.

I'm thinking of doing a UU sermon around the positive qualities of humanism and atheism, and music would be a major part of that.

It's going to be tough to find much-- as you say (eta- and monta just mentioned as well), most music that comes to mind is not an affirmation of atheism so much as a critique of religion particularly fundamentalists.
I'm sure it must've been mentioned already but Bad Religion's Materialist comes to mind, with lyrics like:
I'm materialist, call me a humanist
I guess I'm full of doubt
So I'll gladly have it out with you
I'm materialist
I ain't no deist

And folk singer Roy Bailey's (he's a socialist activist and atheist) cover of I Ain't Afraid:
Rise up, and see /find/ know/ hear a higher story
Free up from the gods of war and glory
Watch out for the threats of purgatory
The spirit of the wind won't make a killing off of sin and satan

Not necessarily an affirmation of atheism, but the implication is there.

Jim Woodland's Miracles:
Everybody knows that the yellow brick road runs right up to the sky
And a fairy lives on top of the christmas tree
And fish can walk and pigs can talk and dogs can probably fly
But when they ask me just to wait for my reward at the pearly gate
I don't believe in miracles
I don't believe that's true
One light
One fight
One little dance, and that's all you do
I don't believe in fairy tales
I don't believe in lies
You don't have to fly
You just have to try
And that's all you do
That's all you do.

If you're willing to take a freethought song rather than one that's explicitly atheist, the song that tops my list in this category is Pete Seeger's version of Die Gedanken sind frei ("Thoughts are Free"). Judging by the translation, I'd probably like the German as well, but I don't speak the language.

If we are talking about secular music than anything that does not specifically advocate a god is up for grabs .

Birds flying high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Reeds driftin on by you know how I feel

(refrain:)
Its a new dawn
Its a new day
Its a new life
For me
And Im feeling good

Fish in the sea you know how I feel
River running free you know how I feel
Blossom in the tree you know how I feel

(refrain)

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, dont you know
Butterflies all havin fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
Thats what I mean

And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me

Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel
