Spam, wonderful spam (bloody vikings!)
I used to use an adblocker here (still do for all the internet) but I have joined so don't see any adverts anyway. I block all ads on principle, even muting all TV ads (and trailers), since I just don't want the intrusions. If they won't let me see anything without also seeing the ads then I move on and don't go back to such sites. Their business to place the ads, my business to accept or reject them. I also use blockers to avoid being tracked - just to keep them from bothering me.

Can you recommend an adblocker?

You can guide the ads to see what you want to see
I want to see no ads, so I run ABP. I want to see it taken a step further, so I run No-Script. I want to see it taken a step further, so I run even more than that (like disabling Facebook trackers).
Now this I disagree with.
And I don't care. Did you know even non-intrusive ads are weighted towards data limits for users who have those? Did you know we should be entitled to and have the right of privacy rather than letting marketing bugs in our house to watch and see tons of what we do?

Does anybody else get spammed with emails for viagra. Does this have anything to do with me looking at internet porn?

I used to get quite of email spam for Viagra, maybe spammers are a bit thick and dont realise Christine is a female name. Fixed it now by setting spam assassin to delete all drugs related mail.

I wouldn't think it's to do with your browsing habits, more that you signed up by email for something or bought something without ticking the opt out to giving your email to any and all third party spammers box.

You left off one option -
  • don't see ads because of ponying up some cash to be a paying member

Pay up for an ad free RF experience. Works for me.

I usually use a tablet and the ads were totally screwing up my experience so paid for a lifetime membership.

I see ads when I'm not signed in, usually for stuff I've already purchased. However, I will get some strange stuff come up in the ads, then I will clear my cache and they will disappear. (I started getting ads for some extreme lingerie, and thought, where did this come from? Probably from my shopping for corsets, which I use for back support. Before that, I was getting ads for designer Indian clothes, including a lot of lime green stuff that @SalixIncendium would probably look fabulous in.)

can't be bothered with all the tracking otherwise.
That's one of the serious problems with ads. Without your consent, companies load your computer with crap, bogging it down, consuming resources, and wasting data. And even when it's reasonably assumable they are tracking you, such as not being on their website, they still track you.

I use ABP, but do have some sites, such as news sites, whitelisted because I understand they have to pay their people and be profitable. I will either do that or subscribe to the site for a small fee to support them.

And yes, I was a paid member here before I became an indentured servant staff member.

I'm just curious as to who among you has clicked on a banner ad or any other ad on RF, and who among you has proceeded to purchase something as a result of seeing and/or clicking the ad.

If you have made multiple purchases, please note this below.
The only time I clicked on an ad was when the screen kept jumping due to the lag. I'm starting to think that's programmed intentionally that way.

I'm on the move a lot so all I use is my phone.

I don't know if it's me but when I go gaming on another system a lot of the same ads crop up. Either its mass marketing at its best , or something is following me with algorithms across multiple platforms.

Incidentally, I occasionally get warnings that nefarious code may be present here at the RF website.

Here's another thought.

If you're active here you obviously find value in the site.
If you're clicking ads you
  • do not seem to have "Premium Member" status
  • yet do seem to have discretionary funds.
If true, why not consider acquiring Premium Member status?

It's chronic. When I see all this, I can't help to say its a mental illness with pathological people who compulsively place addys into every single nook and cranny of just about everything that isn't nailed down and maybe even then some.

It's getting worse and worse too, and I'm Pro capitalism, yet even I say there has to be a limit at some point.

As far as I'm concerned it either will make or break a business or service depending on how irritated they get people by shotgunning ads all over the place.

One of my major issues with capitalism - the intrusiveness and notion that without us all buying continually then civilisation will suddenly end. Plenty have predicted the end of capitalism - can't wait. :D
