Personally I don't have an extreme reaction to most any sounds (probably did earlier in my life) - the usual for many: nails down blackboards, Psycho moments, people sniffing, babies crying, people shouting when using mobiles, noise from neighbours, etc. - but now I am most likely to turn off music that just doesn't appeal or I find too dull (much of modern music unfortunately), those who seem to insist on shouting at us (various media personalities, and many of whom might be slightly deaf, so perhaps forgiven - but still silenced/muted), certain accents or mannerisms, and many who just seem too aggressive. And perhaps I do prefer silence, or the sounds of nature, or the music I love over much else.

For any who can access BBC iPlayer, the following instigated the thread:

I don't normally have any particular reactions to sounds. I have the ability to flex my tensor tympani muscle at will, which is somewhat like a dimmer switch for incoming sound.

I do, however, live across the street from train tracks, with a major intersection just down the street, and if I am outside and a train starts blaring its horn in prep for crossing that intersection, there is this instinctual feeling of dread that washes over me. It's like my brain is screaming at me that there is some horrible danger to watch out for, even though I fully comprehend everything going on. It's weird, to say the least.

What is for most people the sound of nails on chalkboard is for me the sound of a knife screeching on a plate.

The "music" that physically hurts me is German "Schlagermusik".

And I'm partial to people who make me cringe. We have the word "fremdschämen" when you are ashamed of being human when someone other speaks. I prefer Donald Trump (and some other people) second hand.

Rap makes me frantic to get away from it.

As a naughty child I found that if you put chalk in a pencil
sharpener, set it to the right angle on the board
and make a swift upstoke it makes the
fingernail sound but, tremendously amplified.

I once as an adult actually had the chance to
call a noisy room to attention that way.

I think they feared my Power. :D

When I was in my early 20's the group Duran Duran had a hit single that was played far too often on popular music stations. I would jump and spin the dial to get rid of it. My radio usually landed on the classical station. I ended up leaving it there eventually.

Angry men shouting and bragging about how bad they are ... I understand what drives it, and even understand why there's an the audience. But I am not among them. I will never be among them. I can't stand to hear all that mindless, negative BS.

The idea of spoken word 'poetry' mixed with a hard beat, and some other audio accoutrement, is fine.

I don't have any sounds, really. I worked in a group home for the mentally disabled for over a decade.... I can tune out anything.

What drives me to hysteria though, is looking up and seeing a bunch of people all together, all staring at their personal screens... Every day I can restrain myself from ripping the devices out of people's hands and stomping on them repetitively, I consider a success. The sounds from the phones themselves don't bother me, but the ability to sound a blowhorn and not be heard is maddening. Try wrangling the family to go somewhere when no one can hear you...

The idea is ok.

phobia re black men.

My auditory turn-offs are sounds intent on evoking chaos and cacophony (old Bruce Springsteen music, inside of any casino), expressed grandiosity (nearly all 'show tunes', wailing mourners and crying babies, etc.), deliberately manipulative sounds (unwanted sales pitches, movies that go real quit so you can't hear the dialogue, and then blast some sudden noise real loud to 'scare' the audience), and inarticulate sounds (songs and movies with mumbled and unclear dialogue, or dialogue so confusedly written or delivered that it's unintelligible. Public speaking of the same ilk.

It's just the audio, and the singer is a Buddhist, it's safe. But I understand if you don't want to check it out. No reason to stir up bad energies.
It is not that bad. And I normally cannot abide rap. As I like to say, when you spell it the "c" is silent.

That sounds much like how I view most Pop music these days - just a bar or two and off it goes. :D
