Politicians need to lie to be politicians. Do you agree?

That politics is the sublimation of lying.

Of course you have to tell people what they want to hear to get them to vote for you.
You just need to make promises in a way that is deniable.
Like a con man. Make everyone think they are getting what they want before they realize they weren't actually promised anything.

Politicians do NOT have to lie; BUT lying politicians have been successful in recent years
Not quite.
In your country for instance, I have seen politicians claiming that they were for peace, and then they destroyed the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia.
They didn't win the elections.

Well. we all have biases. Some of us just think that it is everybodyelse that have them.
I don't.
I don't consider the nationalist party of Italy perfect. Not at all.
There are warmongers within it. And they know the populace knows who they are.

In part, but the conflation of politicians, diplomats and (though she didn't explicitly add) government officials confuses matters.

In actual political campaigns or debates, I don't think lying is necessary, though being an entirely honest politician would be much more difficult in most modern political environments, so any honest ones tend not to (or don't want to) rise to higher office. In diplomacy and certainly elements of government, it can often be necessary or advisable to lie (or at least not reveal the full truth), but unfortunately, many of those valid circumstances can bleed in to the political side, where the motives and methods will be somewhat different.

I think this is just a broader example of the fundamental problem; that the characteristics which make someone an effective politician are almost entirely opposite to the characteristics which make someone an effective public servant.

Do you as you have any biases? I have myself biases. Do you?
Absolutely not.
If I had, I would say that Russia is a perfect country.
No, they need to modernize themselves. They need a much more democratic and pluralist approach.
But it 100,000 better than certain Middle Eastern countries, so I cannot ignore the log and focus on the speck of dust.

Politicians speak to a wider audience, so they might tend to bend what they say depending on who they're trying to reach. They may tell outright lies, or sometimes they bend the truth in such a way that it might come across like lying.

The successful politicians are those who know how to tell the people what they want to hear. The people can be blamed for wanting to hear it.

People don't really want "the truth" from politicians. They want reassurances that everything is going to be okay.

It's wishful thinking.
But it's always lying, de facto.
They convince themselves that a war is just, but actually they were bribed by the banking sewer who will enormously benefit from the sale of warfare.

Sometimes.
Sometimes they demand that their voters approve of their agenda.

I want the truth, the ugly truth from the ones I vote for.
Oriana Fallaci: write always the truth. It hurts as excruciatingly as surgical scalpels. But it heals.
