Pelosi on Christopher Columbus statue destruction: 'People will do what they do'

If Pelosi was ever a member here on RF she'd be admonished for promoting or condoning illegal activity.

I wonder what happen if the tide turns on the statue wars? I don't know, defacement, destruction, or vandalism of Luther King statues or Frederick Douglass.... Will she condone it then?

People do what they do, right?

Well, you can't encourage defunding the police and then complain about mob rules.

I got the impression that she was at worst tolerating the vandalism,
but not advocating it. However, you're right that advocating rioting
or such destruction would be a rule violation on RF.

It can never be right to vandalise public (or private) property.

And the day that I require a person to have been perfect in every respect, in my time or their own, before I'm willing to acknowledge what they might have contributed, then somebody put me out with the trash -- I'll have earned it.

Quoting fox. That's not good enough knowing how right-wing biased they are (but not good enough for Trump, of course).

Of course some take her quote as approval. But watching what she said in context, to me it's a statement about how mob act.

And of course when trump spews **** about "many fine people" etc, it's 100% perfectly ok. But horror upon horror, when Pelosi says something ambiguous the right has a hissy fit. I got it. When our side does it, there's nothing to see. When their side does it, it's terrible and 100% awful.

Some things don't deserve to be honored on public/government land, but the removal of such should be done via legal, legitimate means. Both sides seem willing to sacrifice ethics to gain a "win" nowadays.

My number one issue with this view is more around her comments about the community being able to decide whether a statue comes down.
    1. I don't completely agree. Some statues should clearly come down, regardless of a majority vote. Simple, stupid example, but a statue to Hitler shouldn't be allowed on public land just because 51% of a given community want it.
    2. I mostly agree otherwise, but how does one assess whether a community wants it? Sure as heck not by having it torn down by protesters.
    3. Assuming agreement on 2 (ie. the protesters don't equal 'the community', wouldn't it make some sense to admonish those tearing down statues, but at the same time put some sort of process in place so the community views have a way of being heard and acted on?

I personally agree with her comments around not investing too much personally into statues. But I do think representation of ALL community members is part of the fundamental problems facing many countries right now, and I don't see how this helps.

It's called a revolution. The statue has zero effect on you.

It might not bother somebody like you or me, but it does bother others.
