Pensioners in Japan committing more crimes

The amount of pensioners in Japanese jails has been on the rise. According to news, it has risen from 5% to 20% in recent years. It seems that desperation is strikingly obvious the reason. If the money you have isn't enough to live, a human will steal food and necessities. A pension that's not enough to live on, yet a prison where you at least get enough food to survive presents an obvious "forced choice" offered by the Japanese government. Of course there are some people who think that elderly people are just lazy and not working hard enough. Especially elderly women seem to be a problem group.

Elderly people in Japan are getting arrested on purpose

Intentionally getting arrested isn’t necessarily unique to Japan. In the United States, for example, there have been cases of people deliberately getting locked up to gain access to healthcare, avoid harsh weather conditions, or force themselves to quit a drug habit.

But the scale of Japan’s problem is alarming authorities. The government is trying to combat its senior crime problem by improving its welfare system and social services programme, according to Bloomberg, but the wave of senior criminals doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon.

“Life inside is never easy,” social worker Takeshi Izumaru said. “But for some, outside, it’s worse.”
