Our war economy

Former President Nestor Kirchner of Argentina, speaking in 2009 of George W. Bush:

We had a discussion in Monterey. I said that a solution for the problems right now, is a Marshall Plan. And he got angry. He said the Marshall Plan is a crazy idea of the Democrats. He said the best way to revitalize the economy is war, and that the United States has grown stronger with war. ... The Democrats had been wrong. All of the economic growth of the United States had been encouraged by the various wars. Those were his exact words. President Bush is -- well, he's only got six more days to go in office, right? Thank God.

I've recently been researching the relationships between science, economics, & technology in the 1800s. The Civil War was hard on the North,
but absolutely devastating in the South. Even when there are short term gains in manufacturing from WW1 & WW2, the tab must be paid
down the road, resulting in merely deferring economic lethargy from one period to a later one. This "war helps the economy" stuff is a very
dangerous myth.....& anyone who thinks war is good for us has a bizarre definition of "good".

Btw, one politician talking about another has a 99% chance of resulting in untruth.

War is not good for the economy, Smoke, but surely even a liberal pinko such as yourself knows war is morally good because it makes real men out of mere boys to go abroad and slaughter 10 civilians for every enemy combatant they get. Take that liberal pinkos! You can't stand the truth!

Don't forget about the huge profits to the corporations that supply private contractors; most of the money we spend on Afghanistan doesn't go to improve the lives of the people or to support our military, but right into the pockets of for-profit corporations.

Aye.. someone has to profit off of indebting poor nations and using the money to support American-based large-scale infrastructure projects in their country. I mean, without profit what would be the human motivation to get out there and work!?

Thankfully, a guy like that could never get reelected by the decent people who make up the majority of the American electorate.
