"Rang Panchami" today, i.e., the Holi of Gods. Main center, Varanasi. Auspicious because of connection to Shiva, Sarasvati and Radha Krishna.
Marks the end of Holi celebrations.

New Year for many/most Hindus recently. Marvelled at the similarities between Kashmiri brahmin and Iranian New Year celebrations (except the date). Haft sin - 7 auspicious things.

Third day of the Spring (Chaitra) Navratras (nine nights) in honor of Mother Chandraghanta. No non-veg, no onions for the nine days, no garlic, which otherwise also we do not use.

Seventh day of Spring Navratra, worshiping Mother Kalratri.
Beginning of the important festival of Central India, Chhath, worshiping Sun and his sister, 'Chhathi Maiyya' for welfare of the family.
Celebrated twice in a year like many other (harvest) festivals. The bigger one comes in November.

Navaraqtri concludes, the ninth day today.
Also celebrating the birth anniversary of Lord Rama, Rama Navami.

Hindu festival days and processions are generally the target of Muslim communalists and the political parties which benefit from such disturbances.
Grave danger of disturbances in West Bengal Murshidabad which borders Bangladesh and has a large percentage of illegal Muslim migrants.
The West Bengal government depends on their support. Let us see.

A gimmick, but OK for fun. The sun will apply the 'tilak' to Lord Rama's idol in Ayodhya (Rama is considered a descendant of the Sun God).
Mirrors on the third floor of the Rama temple will carry the rays of sun and focus on the fore-head of the Rama idol.

Lineage of Lord Rama:
Vivaswan (the Sun), Ikshavaku - Vena, Prithu - Mandhata, Muchukunda - Trishanku - Sagar - Bhagiratha - Dilipa, Raghu - Dasaratha, Rama.
(- means some names have been left out, only the important personages are being named)

He can move mountains.
:D No, he cannot. He was told that the medicine (Sanjivani) needed by Laxman is florescent. But he found many florescent bushes on Dronagiri. So, which one should he choose? What he did was that he tore a part of the mountain and carried it to Sri Lanka.

Jagannatha Yatra is on in Puri, Gujarat and other locations. Odisha has a BJP government this time.
A million gathered on the first day (1 death).

Kanwar Yatra to begin on July 22 (getting water from River Ganges and bathing Shivalinga in some Shiva temple).
Report: 20 million people perform Kanwar Yatra.
