Nonsense verse

Hobbies

I like to paint onions with bright red faces
I send them to people in various places
They cut and they slice them into a bowl
Or throw them downstairs to watch them roll

More of Edward's poems -

Gozo my child is the isle of Calypso
That naughty young woman who made egg flip so
And all day long with a spoon did sip so,
And every morn in the sea did dip so
Whereon Ulysses seeing her strip so
And all her beautiful ringlets drip so
From her beautiful head to her beautiful hipso
Because her curls she never would clip so,
— Took to staying away from his ship so,
And she his mariners all did tip so
And fed them with chickens that had the pip so
For fear he should ever give her the slip so
And over the ocean start for a trip so
Singing — (with peculiar sweetness — ) " This is
I who have wheedled the wily Ul yss es,
With kurls and kobwebs and kustards and kisses
Gip so, whip so, crip so, and quip so
Flip so, bip so, rip so and zip so —
O naughty Calypso!
Which made the little hills for to skip so!"

Are these the best examples of nonsense verse in English? Selected by Dr Oliver Tearle

Nonsense literature is one of the great subsets of English literature, and for many of us a piece of nonsense verse is our first entry into the world of poetry. In this post, we’ve selected ten of the greatest works of nonsense poetry. We’ve omitted several names from this list, including Dr Seuss (because his best nonsense verse, whilst brilliant, is longer than the short-poem form, often comprising book-length narratives), Hilaire Belloc (whose best work is best-understood as part of the ‘cautionary verse’ tradition, which isn’t as nonsensical as bona fide nonsense verse), and Ogden Nash, whose work seems to be less in the nonsense verse tradition than more straightforward comic verse. Some of these suggestions come courtesy of Quentin Blake’s The Puffin Book of Nonsense Verse (Puffin Poetry)
ir
, which we’d recommend to any fans of nonsense verse looking for an anthology of beautiful nonsense.

Here's a little something I just pieced together here in the library -

Life is too important to take too serious
Play like a child and be more curious
This universe is wonderfully mysterious
Try real hard not to overlook the obvious

Okay you got me - that last line didn't rhyme
Am I taking up too much of your valuable time?
This poem is almost like a nursery rhyme
Be patient and wait for something more sublime

Enjoy your day!

:)

Whoa!!! I feel honored. You used something I posted to you in one of your poems. Thank you so much!

No worries!

I take inspiration wherever I can find it ...''

I could write a limerick about a man called Milton - tough to rhyme with your name!

Let me work on it a bit.

Enjoy your day!

I did write a limerick - this is the best I could do at 3 am on a few hours sleep!

There once was a man named Milton Platt
Who was as cool as a ***** cat
He liked to discuss
The origins of us
He knew this earth was not flat

Last line needs work but I posted it anyways?

I considered all of the following - some are pushing the envelope a bit and may require you to have a good sense of fun & humour. :)

He wondered if this universe was flat

He always put out the welcome mat

His mind was as cunning as a rat

His head was remarkably flat!

He loved to wear a pink hat

His mind flapped around like a bat

I'm a bit of a perfectionist. The last line is okay but I wanted a stronger finish to the limerick - I have only written a few so I am still a novice at the art ...

All the best!

10 of the Best Comic Poems Everyone Should Read

What are the funniest comic poems in the English language? What makes for a successfully humorous poem? The following post offers a selection of ten of the best and funniest comic poems in English literature, from the Middle Ages to the present day (or almost). As we’ve confined ourselves to ten poems, we’ve tended to focus on English (or British) poetry, and so have left out a few notable writers of light verse, such as Ogden Nash. Perhaps a follow-up post will have to atone for this, but in the meantime, we hope you enjoy these celebrated comic poems.
