Nietzsche was writing only for his readers.

I completely agree, Angellous. Nietzsche is quite clear that he is not writting for a mass audience, but for people who share many or most of his concerns to begin with, and have a fair knowledge of formal philosophy. That is also why he so often uses empathetic arguements, I think.

I get the feeling that his audience is 1.

I respect Nietzsche for his intellectual honesty. He took naturalism to its logical conclusions (nihilism), whereas it seems many naturalists "pretend" there is freewill, morality and a significant purpose to life.

I personally do not believe nihilism is a healthy philosophy as we have a strong inner need to attribute meaning in our lives. Nietzsche actually went crazy later in his life, although there have many debates as to whether or not this was related to his philosophy.
