Our Prime Minister just announced New Zealand would be moving in lock down for at least 4 weeks. In the last 24 hours we have 36 new cases of Covid 19 bringing our total to 102. 2 of the cases to date can not be connected to overseas travel or close contact with someone who has been infected. Therefore we must assume we now have community spread.

What total lock down means is that everyone stays at home unless they are providing an essential service. Supermarkets, doctors, pharmacies, service stations, access to essential banking services will all be available. However If individuals do not have immediate needs, they should not leave their home. Social distancing should be maintained at supermarkets when people are undertaking essential shops.

Non-essential businesses must now close. All bars, restaurants, cafes, gyms, cinemas, pools, museums, libraries, playgrounds and any other place where the public congregate must close their face to face function. Schools and universities will close.

PM Jacinda Ardern's full lockdown speech

As a general practitioner we have just moved to consulting with patients by phone or video in the first instance and will only see patients face to face if necessary as fears COVID-19 is already being transmitted in the community.

The move is aimed at protecting both the community and doctors on the frontline in the battle against the spread of coronavirus.

GPs move to minimise patient contact amid fears of COVID-19 community transmission

We have just put a portable cabin in our practice’s car park to use as an isolation room.

We will be discouraging people with mild symptoms from attending at all but those with moderate to severe symptoms who have flu like symptoms can be seen once full protective gear is worn by our GPs.

Its kinda nice to be able to provide updates on RF and to hear each other’s experiences. We can discuss and debate for sure. I may be too busy to respond but I’m listening to what you are all saying.:)

Here in the US, there was a games store, Gamestop, that I believe was trying to argue that in locked-down states, it was considered an essential store, that it's entertainment was important. Obviously this isn't true, but they managed to have some leverage/delay of action for quite some time, until finally the powers-that-be I believe put their foot down.

Here in Illinois, the state is on lockdown after around 1-2 cases in my town, and quite a few cases in Chicago, Cook County, etc.

Yeah, it's freaky at the moment. I am basically at the point where I'm gonna just stay inside myself now. Hilariously enough I just filled up my car to the top with petrol two days ago, lol.

Also, as I'm in the work benefit with work and income at the moment, future appointments have literally been canceled for the foreseeable future. It's freaky cause now I have no idea what to do about employment.
It's a situation where the doors are closing all around us.

    Thanks for sharing.

Along with the announcement our country is shutting is also plans to ensure people on social welfare continue to have access to services either online or by phone. The government’s making it easier for people to go on a benefit recognising tens of thousands will lose their jobs, won’t be able to work or may not get paid.

I think it would be hard to convince authorities that gaming stores are essential services alongside health, food and finances lol. Hey, welcome back to RF.

Yes, but people actually want to come to Australia, we also play a role on the global economic stage in terms of trade and finance.

Do you have a competent authority who knows what an essential service is? I'd argue that it's essential not to abandon liberty.

In times of crisis liberty and some of the freedoms we take for granted are sacrificed. I see that as being necessary.

    That's nothing!
McDonald's Takeaway services, all 1300 outlets in the UK, are closing down at end of trading today.
That's it. Turn out the lights. Lockdown.

    :p

We had our last takeaway tonight (Indian) before the lockdown takes effect. Talked to the owner whose business has really been struggling the last month. Hope you're well.:)

    Yes..... so far so good.
    Day by Day......

I feel for the healthcare workers all, stuffed on to an intangible front line to do their best with........ with what? I guess that there will be successes and wins to remember, but the losses will amount to a level of traumatic stress which will be hard to ever remove.

Yeah...... and so good luck to you and your colleagues.

This morning I am going to visit a McDonald's drive-thru and if it is still manned I will purchase a Breakfast Wrap and take it to the woods for breakfast. I don't know why 'cos I have not had a McDonalds in years, but there you are..,...

    Good luck with everything, Adrian.

No, liberty isn't sacrificed. The tradition of the justitium is from the Roman law, not the common law. Necessity is a humanist idea which is associated with lawlessness.
The presumption of liberty isn't conditional upon any perceived state of emergency.

Ask my 16 yr old grandson if its true. He went a few days ago and the store was extremely careful, letting only one person in the store at a time. All schools are closed, no friends allowed over etc. and no going out except in the back yard, the games are a lifesaver. That was his one trip to use up a Christmas gift card. I don't know if the store remains open.

My GP closed his office to all patients except those he needs to physically interact with. Everything else is done over the phone, internet and if need be at the hospital (CT, MRI, etc) based on triage. My cancer surveillance tests have been delayed which require a hospital. Blood work is based on appointments instead of appointments and drop ins before the virus
