I don't think it's the beliefs that make the difference, it's your perspective on life and how satisfactory your social life is.

A lot of religious fundalmentalists seem to live lives consumed by fear and hate. They can't be very happy.

I couldn't have said it better. But I will add that atheists are starting to form skeptic-type secular organizations that resemble the Sunday Assembly and other similar meetings and organizations for those without faith.

Do they sing praises to The Big Bang? And baptize people with "just water"?

Now to let the religious know.

Atheists are not people who lead empty sad angry lives of despair because there is no God in their world.

It's true that many atheists not only dislike the idea of religion but the concept of religious activity too. So the vast majority of atheists tend to side on individualism as well. Chances are however there are times that most people want to be involved in some social activities, and now that there is starting to be a vacuum of activity left by the skeptics some seek out to find something greater than them - it just doesn't include God. 0.1% is a bit low, don't you think? At least a few percent of atheists have joined a science or skeptics community.

    I'm happy that they're happy.

I just hope when they take over the world that they remember I was always an ally.

Terrible, misleading headline for the article; theism =/= religion; atheism =/= irreligion (and this isn't what they actually looked at). What they actually looked at makes the meaning of the study more limited, but still interesting. What this study is probably actually telling us is "atheists" have "irreligious" equivalents of "religious" behaviors that are associated with health and wellness. The problem is preconceived notions of what is and isn't (ir)religious, which ultimately boils down to "it's (ir)religious because reasons."

What I really want to see is an actual study that eschews all these nonsense (a)theist/(ir)religious labels and really, really looks at the actual substance of behaviors and habits. Surely someone has done this.

I think the local chapter of American Atheists had some kind of monthly gathering at a local coffee shop, but it was just people gathering for coffee, breakfast, and talk. Sometimes they'd have guest speakers. I think they had Satan come in one time to give a talk.
