Title:Neurodiversity
Little boy autistic,
Taught to suppress his natural behavior.
At the cost of mental health and pain.
Can’t you hear the tears?
They’ll hold you down,
On textures that hurt.
To get you to act the way they do.
You’re an embarrassment.
Look them in the eye,
Even if it does harm you.
They won’t take no for an answer.
And wonder why,
When they tell you
Your body is not yours.
And you can’t say no
That’s it ok for adults to do
whatever they want to you
That you are more likely to be sexuallly assualted.
Little boy, they say,
Don’t dare flap your hands,
Act the way we do,
You’ll be fine.
Little boy autistic,
Bullied through school,
Told if you tried harder to fit in,
No harm would come to you.
But you’ve tried and tried.
Can’t pick up on social cues.
Body language can’t be read.
April comes around,
You’re told you’re a burden
To your family.
That you’ll never succeed in life.
That if your family kills you
It would be mercy.
Then they wonder why
Autistics are more likely
To commit suicide.
Little boy, they said,
Don’t dare flap your hands,
Act the way we do,
You’ll be fine.
But little boy autistic,
There is nothing wrong with you,
Autism is not a curse,
It’s a different perspective,
A different way of being,
As an adult,
You could be successful.
Even if
It’s not the same way as others.
Nothing wrong with hand-flapping,
Have loud hands,
To help you process.
If people stare who cares?
There is a whole community
Of people like us,
Who understand
How we see the world.
And the positives of who we are,
As individuals.
Don’t listen when they say:
Don’t dare flap your hands,
Act the way we do,
You’ll be fine.
