Though I used to watch Mythbusters, I've never seen that episode.
I just deduced that straw floats and steel does not.

Depending on the size of the needle, it may float as well.
Yep, you're right, verified by an experiment performed in my bathroom sink. Apparently sharps needles float and embroidery needles do not.

Use a three foot haystack and a six foot needle.
Another fun fact, if the needle is magnetized and floating, it will orient itself North-South. You know, if you are ever lost and short a compass.
