It bugs me no end when my side has people commit heinous crimes like this one. I've decried it when people on the right commit crimes and violence in the name of their beliefs. I have to do the same when the left is guilty of the same thing. Yes we can argue percentages but the basic fact is the violence in the name of politics is not respecter of ideology and that it's wrong no matter what justification is given.

A church battling coronavirus restrictions was destroyed in a fire that investigators believe was arson

In addition, investigators found graffiti on the lot that read, "Bet you stay home now you hypokrits [sic]

We don't know, according to the article, if the arsonist(s) were left wing, or even politically motivated. Could be they are frightened and angered Christians.

Great post, but let’s not rush to a conclusion about who did it before the responsible party is found.

That's a tragic story. I don't understand why churches though, are insisting on violating government restrictions. A building isn't ''essential'' to worship or pray or have faith. It's like people just want something more to be angry about. That said, this story is sad, on so many levels.

There seem to be at least three things wrong with refusing to admit that violent extremists can exist on both sides of the right/left political division.

First, denying even the possibility of such people on one's own side is tantamount to aiding and abetting them. You are essentially helping to shield them from suffering even the gentlest negative consequences for their behavior. This makes you as bad as they are in moral terms, albeit perhaps not in practice.

Second, pretending that the larger issue is the fact your side has fewer of them than the other side is relevant only in certain, limited contexts, such as if you were making an argument about which side poses the more immediate threat to the Constitution. If you are talking about the morality of extremism, then an act of violence does not become moral simply because it's rare.

Last, denying the violence, or potential for violence, on your side implies you harbor a ridiculous view of human nature. It's as if you think your side is one species, and their side is another. Those sorts of views easily lend themselves to demonizing other humans.

It could be someone left-wing, but if it was, I'd not only be pissed at them for burning a church, but also for spelling "hypocrites" wrong.

There's something about this that smells funny, but I'm reticent to speculation at this point.

This is affective behavior stimulated by fear. It does not have to be anyone other than someone afraid and acting on the impulses associated with this fear. We are clearly emotional organisms trying to be as cognitive as we can but when there is a threat we show are emotional side more often. Clear ventromedial prefrontal cortex over dorsal lateral cortex with a large influence of the amygdala..

Hostility could explain the behavior too.
It lies in the mesotibial prefamulateral contrex under the modial interlaxative comdex.

Stop making this stupid, thoughtless comparison. No one said stores were without risk. They are however a lower risk since people don't sit together and socialize in close quarters like they do at church. Also, stores provide food which makes risk necessary. Obviously, this can't be said of churches.

Sorry I guess I have been concentrating on neurological pathways too much. Now clearly self evident. Cant help it though it is really fascinating how our brain works. Not sure what the modial interalaxitive comdex is but how could I doubt your knowledge.

I'm a little confused why you include violent criminals on your side. Surely you'd be better of changing teams.

Or insurance fraud, or any number of things. Let the investigators gather information and do their thing.

So you weren't being sarcastic, suggesting that churches are just as safe and important as grocery stores?

    Exactly.

And, just for the record, you and I are the only honest people here, although I do have some questions about yours!
