My Poetic Gift to You

The Voice of Reason

Doctor of Thinkology
I spent the last two hours of my life polishing this little jewel - and I hope you find it worth your while:

The Religious Forums Blues

It's two o'clock in the morning, on what was a Friday night,
And I'm arguing with some moron that just can't see the light.
He's telling me he's righteous, and claims to know God's mind,
While I repeat my point and try to show him that he's blind.

Agnostics are playing word games - while the Theists quote from John,
It's three AM, I'm bleary eyed, as the debates go raging on.
The priests prepare the sacraments the Catholics will soon receive,
As the Buddhists spread their Karma that the Atheists don't believe.

My swollen mind is spinning now, as it approaches four o'clock,
This foolish moron, I conclude, could use electro-shock.
I come back from the kitchen – had to quell a hunger pang,
With snack in hand I marvel, at the Taoists' Yin and Yang.

The Christians and the UU's spar, saying the other has no clue,
I think I'm making headway as I spread my point of view!
It's five o'clock - the debate has turned - fundamentalism is the topic,
These nonbelievers could all be saved, if they weren't so damned myopic.

It's six o'clock in the morning and I've been typing through the night,
And the moron with no logic - has convinced me that HE'S right.
I'd never have believed it - that I might be mistaken -
Damned if I'll admit it though, my faith has not been shaken!

The sun is rising now, and I've argued all night long,
With well intentioned people that can't admit their wrong.
But through it all, no matter what, I will enjoy the season,
And wish you all the best of times –

If you want to have a happy season
then try hard to find the reason
why you let them mess with your head
instead of getting yourself to bed.:)

Well, picture me in the background, accompanying you (very badly) on harmonica!

I particularly loved your inclusion of the startling moment when you realize someone else may be right. (I hate it when that happens!) It's one of the best things about RF, that one is sometimes reminded about these things.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us! *huge hugs*

You know...as I was reading, I had music in my head. Like it's suppose to be a song. Very nice TVOR. :woohoo:

Mscarderro - I don't think your statement odd at all - as a matter of fact, when I write a poem like that, I do so with a rhythm in my head. I usuall try to make the flow of the words match a basic blues beat. Just curious - what type of music did you hear in your head? Anyone else hear the music?

Thanks,

I will have to sing it to carrdero, cause frankly, (not that I am calling you frankly)
I have no clue what the tune is. All I know that it's in my head now.

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Yes it does flow. As to blues. I read a few lines and did indeed think i could imagine BB King singing them.

I liked your poem too. I am not able to write in rhyme like that. But you did it well.

TVOR would do great in marketing! That is, as long as you could find him a project in which he'd be able to be completely honest. I think his morals would limit him on any other type, hehee!

As for the music, I just get that classic 'call and answer' blues riff.
BA BA BA DA BUM.

Thanks for all the kind feedback, everyone. I've been out of pocket for about a week, and I'm Jonesing for Religious Forums. I'll try to catch up over the weekend or at the beginning of next week.

I think this thread should be made a sticky. TVOR's poem is like an anthem for the Religious Forums. It should be kept around.

Loved it Voice! You're a poet and didn't even know it! Now, hmmm, the moron in your poem was whom? Great poem, loved it.

Good question, Watcher, but I didn't really have anyone in mind. I tried to keep the poem as generic as possible, so that any of us could see ourselves in it (at least somewhere along the line). That is why I tried not to make the person that was reading it feel as though they were of any particular belief system.
