Reason, and reason again
Consideration for others requires some essential direction in one's mental state. Self-interest is not a real predicate to consciousness. The use of self-interest is essential to the mind much as a computer can not operate software without a CPU. We need to define terms to set an agreement on what altruism means. For a human to act with no consideration for its impact on the self is unattainable, but if one procures a positive stimulus from the happiness of another that can still be called altruism.

Morals appear to be built out of these more developed mental components like the frontal cortex. Boys who suffer from a lack of empathy have shown that their neostriatums activate at the sight of pain while simultaneously emotional regulators do not respond. In essence, to be socially inept weakens our brain's ability to function. We now understand that genes respond to the environment to the benefit and detriment of the organism. Morals are built from these same principles. Our development is directly tied to the development of others in our species. We aid our oldest instincts when we are selfish at the detriment of that which makes us human. Therein lies our strength and a sound moral base.
