Muhammad- the flag-bearer of peace

Yes, he was.

If that were the case then he wouldn't need to depend on his followers to parrot such claims over and over again. Just like if Islam truly was a "religion of peace" it wouldn't have to continuously claim so, in the same sense that if North Korea actually was a democratic republic for the people, it wouldn't resort to always calling itself the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

What was it Tywin Lannister said? "And any man who must say ‘I am the king’ is no true king at all.". Truer words never spoken by a fictional character.

Peace be on you.
1=Learned this above phrase from Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on you).
2=One is sure you know the incident [which took place in his early years, still he was not declared as Prophet] , there was a situation developed that after some repair work of Kaaba [Ka'ba,], the black stone [hajar al-aswad] was to be placed at its place. All chiefs wanted they do it and it was very tense time;

"....... The famous Black Stone ‑a cornerstone, probably of meteoric origin‑had to be replaced in position in the southeastern angle of the walls. Several leading families of the Qureish coveted the honor of placing the stone in position, and vehemently pressed their claim. The controversy became heated, tempers rose, and threats were uttered that the sword would be the arbiter. Someone suggested that the matter might be settled peacefully through arbitration. Muhammad chanced to enter the enclosure of the Ka'aba at that moment, and it was agreed that the dispute should be referred to him, and that his decision should be accepted. After ascertaining the cause of the argument, Muhammad spread out his cloak on the ground and placed the Black Stone on it. He then invited the leading members of the families that desired to have the honor of placing the stone in position to lift the cloak and carry the stone in this manner next to the angle of the wall where it had to be placed. Muhammad then lifted the stone and placed it in position. This satisfied everybody, and resolved a situation that had threatened to become grave to the point of possible bloodshed....."

....
....

His pace with peace continued to grow till latter part of his time:
".....During the last ten years of his life he was called upon to discharge the duties of chief executive and chief magistrate of a heterogeneous community, divided into sections in conflict with each other. He became the head of a state fraught with internal frictions and beset with external dangers of every description. In addition to the heavy duties and responsibilities pertaining to his Prophetic office, he was called upon to display qualities of administration and statesmanship which taxed him to the utmost......He was a man of peace. The due discharge of the trust and responsibility which God had been pleased to place on him demanded the establishment and preservation of peace. His enemies would let him have no peace. They forced him to take up arms in defense of the most fundamental human right: freedom of conscience. He hated war and conflict, but when war was forced upon him he strove to render it humane. He abolished all savage and barbarous practices......"

All Prophets comes when there is chaos and oppression in the land.
They single handed stand against mafias of existing injustice and evil, claim their victory when they are alone, and get it against all odds.
Far after they leave, some of their followers abuse their teachings and it gives opponents to find opportunity to blame them for unrest.
In actuality, all Prophets are peace restorers.

Please see what he (pbuh) was taught:
[43:89] I swear by his repeated cry ‘O my Lord!’ that these are a people who will not believe.
[43:90] Therefore, turn aside from them, and say, ‘Peace’; and soon shall they know.

BUT

What is some of his followers doing now? Taking lives of innocent Muslims and non-Muslims!

Is not yet time to restore Islam in its original peaceful shape? as it was prophesied by Holy Prophet (pbuh), through the spiritual apparatus [The Promised restorer of faith - The Promised Messiah Mahdi and his Khilafat].

By the grace of Allah, and in line of teaching of Holy Prophet (pbuh), the flag here in this Post has Kalima [la elaha illallaho muhammadur rasul ullah: There is none worthy of worship except Allah, Muhammad is His Messeneger] written in it. It does not carry any sword, gun, bomber, rocket, hand grenade etc]

Some history: Post # 38 @ http://www.religiousforums.com/thre...eptions-of-posters.170667/page-2#post-4027659

It is now uphill task but doable with the help of Allah, to show the world that true Islam was / is actually way of individual and international peace - not making pieces.

If we stand in the shoes of West, and see what they see. They see current unrest in Muslim countries, people migrating to West, and latter claiming to take over their assets in science and technology.....Current Muslims [unlike earlier ones who developed knowledge], have developed not much, they buy weapons, look for foreign investment etc Their leaders play role of puppet of rich countries, who find easy way to reach natural resources in foreign lands.

The West also need to stand in the shoes of common people / peaceful Muslims in Muslim countries. It will automatically stop the power of corrupt theocracy and its ill wishes to conquer the West. But do not disturb the moral fibres in those lands.

Thus the whole subject is something very deep and vast.

in the same sense that if North Korea actually was a democratic republic for the people, it wouldn't resort to always calling itself the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

After the Liberation of America dissidents like yourself will be quickly reeducated.

What a sick way of thinking.

Does the Quran really contain over a hundred verses promoting violence?

The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers for the sake of Islamic rule. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

If Quran meant to fight and kill all of non-Muslims, then why are many verses praising pious people of previous religions, though it call itself the final and perfect message. But it acknowledges pious people of other previous religions too.
For example:
[1:2] All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all people / all the worlds,

[2:63] Surely, the Believers, and the Jews, and the Christians and the Sabians — whichever party from among these truly believes in Allah and the Last Day and does good deeds — shall have their reward with their Lord, and no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve.

[4:163] But those among them who are firmly grounded in knowledge, and the believers, believe in what has been sent down to thee and what was sent down before thee, and especially those who observe Prayer and those who pay the Zakat and those who believe in Allah and the Last Day. To these will We surely give a great reward.

[5:84] And when they hear what has been revealed to this Messenger, thou seest their eyes overflow with tears, because of the truth which they have recognized. They say, ‘Our Lord, we believe, so write us down among those who bear witness.

[7:160] And of the people of Moses there is a party that exhorts people to truth and does justice therewith.

[22:18]As to those who believe, and the Jews, and the Sabians, and the Christians, and the Magians and the idolaters, verily, Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection; surely Allah is Witness over all things.

War related verses are specific cases.
Plz remember Islam came when Arabs were embroiled in non ending wars. It did not come to start more wars.

You may read details about such war related verses at
http://www.alislam.org/quran/tafseer/guide.htm?region=E1

========================================================================

At that early times, Muslims were being attacked, after long patience of 13 years they were asked for defence, that is it.
[22:40] Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged — and Allah indeed has power to help them —

[22:41] Those who have been driven out from their homes unjustly only because they said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ — And if Allah did not repel some men by means of others, there would surely have been pulled down cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft commemorated. And Allah will surely help one who helps Him. Allah is indeed Powerful, Mighty —

[22:42] Those who, if We establish them in the earth, will observe Prayer and pay the Zakat and enjoin good and forbid evil. And with Allah rests the final issue of all affairs.

Fights after Holy Prophet (pbuh) and four Khalifs were mainly because when people accepted Islam in huge numbers in little time, many were not able to get proper training in morals and patience, which caused subsequent problems.

However, as one believes, you have chance to study revival of Islam now in the form of Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam, the second phase of progress through faith, prayers, pen and good acts.

Muhammad always upheld dialogue, reconciliation and peace, but others did not respond him in the same spirit.
