Trending on twitter because he's blocking even Republican proposals to make our elections more secure. Whatever his motive, to me he is doing what Putin wants.

Senators Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, and Chris Van Hollen, Democrat of Maryland, wrote on Monday to colleagues reconciling the annual House and Senate military policy bill to request that they include stalled sanctions legislation meant to deter Russia or other foreign actors from interfering in American elections. House lawmakers included a similar provision in their military policy bill, but the senators want to see it strengthened to slap Russia’s economy with intense sanctions if it is found to interfere in a future election.

“This conference committee represents this Congress’ best — potentially last — opportunity to enact meaningful legislation aimed at deterring Russia from a repeat performance of its 2016 presidential election interference,” the senators wrote. “We ask that you seize this opportunity and include the provisions outlined above in the final conference report.”

On Tuesday, Senator Susan Collins of Maine, a Republican member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, signed on to a measure by Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the committee’s top Democrat, that would require campaign officials to report to federal authorities any offers of campaign assistance from foreign entities.

“Russia’s efforts to interfere in our elections remain relentless,” said Ms. Collins, who is also up for re-election next year, in a statement.

I don't have any problem with this legislation, so I'm not sure why McConnell is opposing it. Probably more to do with the provisions about campaign financing and accounting.

Overall, I agree that there badly needs to be reforms in the electoral process, including better security to ensure that the will of the people is properly registered and implemented. I also think that we need to find ways to get "big money" out of the process as much as possible.

I always thought all this talk about the "big bad Russians" was overblown and exaggerated, just as it was during the Cold War. I'm not saying that they're innocent (which of us is?), but the current narrative about "Russian interference" is structured in such a way as to imply that there were never any problems with the electoral system prior to 2016.

If they look at this problem as something that only the Russians did, then they're not going to come close to solving it.

But most of interference was internal not foreign. Hillary gave Putin the motivation, the rest is history. And its not only the US elections, but in France and England, where outside interference played out.

Who really cares about US democracy anyway? It's essentially been a coin toss for the last 60 years or so. It doesn't really matter anywhere near as much as people seem to think it does. Voting seems kinda psychotic to me now.

If one does not mind standing in a bread line for hours to get a loaf of bread before the store runs out, waiting for a day in a line to get in to see a doctor or dentist, having the authorities to be able to enter your dwelling at any time they deem necessary, or taking your loved ones away forever because of political suspicions, then the Chinese/Russian way of life might not seem too bad.

You have to go back to the history of Putin and Clinton.
I think at first, assuming Clinton would win, his goal was to discredit her presidency as she publically called into question his. And thanks to the abuse of social media and the nature of some to suck up whatever is in print if it agrees with them, it was like a runaway train. That Trump actually won was frosting on the cake for Putin.

Putin is anti democracy, whether it be hear or England or France.

And you blame Hillary for that?

That is mighty creative, if so.

When mass protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin erupted in Moscow in December 2011, Putin made clear who he thought was really behind them: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

With the protesters accusing Putin of having rigged recent elections, the Russian leader pointed an angry finger at Clinton, who had issued a statement sharply critical of the voting results. “She said they were dishonest and unfair,” Putin fumed in public remarks, saying that Clinton gave “a signal” to demonstrators working “with the support of the U.S. State Department” to undermine his power. “We need to safeguard ourselves from this interference in our internal affairs,” Putin declared.

If it were not for our insatiable insistence on instant gratification / result we could return to paper ballots with a paper trail.

    In the news.....
Protesters gather outside McConnell's Kentucky home, one calls for his stabbing 'in the heart'

I'd have linked Wa Po, but for the paywall.

    Excerpted....
A group of protesters supporting gun control gathered outside the home of Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. where one expressed that someone should "stab the motherf---er in the heart."

The protest took place on Sunday night in the wake of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. McConnell is currently recovering from a fall he had over the weekend, leaving him with a fractured shoulder.

Approximately 25 demonstrators stood on the sidewalk near McConnell's Louisville home, shouting "No Trump, no KKK, no Fascist USA!" while others called him names like "Murder Turtle" and made loud noises by banging objects and dragging a shovel back and forth on the ground as a group of security personnel stood between the protestors and the home, WLKY reported.

“The b---- is home — we keep seeing the lights go on and off,” another protester can be heard shouting. “This h-- really thought he was going to get ready to be at home after he hurt his little punk *** shoulder. B----, don’t nobody give a f---! F–k your thoughts and prayers, Mitch. F--- you, f--- your wife, f--- everything you stand for. ”

Well, this sounds like a very articulate fellow. With such erudite and intelligent people speaking for the left, one might well wonder why they're having so much trouble gaining the hearts and minds of the masses.

And don't forget how non-violent & non-rapey an example is set with such a protest.

    Interesting....
In searching for a source trusted by our leftish friends here, I couldn't find one.
Now if a pro-Trump crowd had urged sexual violence & stabbing of a Democrat,
it would be all over the news.

Yeah, although this was on the news, too. I can't really say whether it's sources trusted by leftists, but I'm reasonably convinced that this event happened. On the other hand, it could have been staged or infiltrated by agents provocateur. You can never really tell nowadays.

I think protesting in front of people's houses in the middle of the night is a rather classless move, though. It also disturbs the peace of other people in the neighborhood who are not the target of the protest.

    A false flag operation, eh.
The timing is classless, but the exhortations to stab & rape are worse.

So much for Republicans screaming about voter fraud and having to keep the elections pure.

It's important to let our leftish friends know the dangers of
characterizing their opposition by the nastier elements.
They could be hoist by their own petard, eh.

I don't think we can discount the fact these kind of whack jobs are paid to be morons in public. Soros funded Occupy Wall Street. I don't doubt for a minute that the dregs from that group gravitated to Antifa and under the same financial umbrella.
The whole point of the evil that works behind the curtain in this country, the deep state that actually does exist, is to cause chaos, division, and fear.
When it gets bad enough what happens? The same as post 9-11. Big Brother swoops in with a bona fide solution to quell the fears. Expansion of government.
