Heard about a bunch of Mormon beliefs I find to be pretty odd. Just wanted to know if they are actually true and how people feel about them.

    1) There is a planet called Kolob that resides next to the throne of God

    2) Mormons wear "magic underwear" called Temple Garments, that protect are said to protect them from bullets, knives, fire, and the power of Satan

3)Black skin is the Mark of Cain and is a curse upon sinful people. A person who is righteous enough can become white.

4)God actually had sex with Mary to bring Jesus into the world

5)In order to make it into heaven, you MUST pay a full and honest tithe

6)Mormons are not allowed to drink coffee

7)Jesus went to America to preach to the Natives

    8) God is a man and he's about 6 feet tall

    9) Mormons can't play sports on Sunday

10)Mormons are not allowed to swim because Satan has control of oceans, lakes, and rivers

Yeah. I'm trying to remember the post on facebook that I saw that said something along the lines of

"Its just a triology. The Jews are the ones that love the first movie but hate the 2nd and 3rd. The Christians say the sequel was even better than the first but the third was just terrible. The Muslims think the 1st and 2nd were not all that great but the 3rd movie was awesome. Then Mormons liked the 1st and 2nd movie so much that they had to write their own fanfiction of it."

Just a few very quick responses, since I'm getting ready to leave for the day...

Kolob is actually said to be a star, the star closest to Heaven. And no, we don't know where it is.

We wear a "temple garment" under our clothes that is not considered by any of us to be "magic." It serves as a reminder of the promises we make to God when we go to the temple to worship. See this post.

Cain was given a mark by which he could be easily recognized, but that in no way implies that people with black skin are any more sinful than anyone else. Nobody can (or should want to) change his or her skin color by becoming "righteous."

False. Mary was a virgin when she conceived and gave birth to Jesus. Had she had sex with someone in order to conceive, she would not be a virgin.

Keeping the law of tithing (once a person is actually aware of this law) will ultimately result in more blessings than not keeping it. In Mormon theology, though, pretty much everyone will end up going to heaven -- even atheists. ;)

That's right. Coffee is forbidden by "The Word of Wisdom" which is a revelation received by Joseph Smith in 1838. Tobacco and alcohol are also prohibited.

Yes, after His resurrection and ascension into Heaven, He appeared to some of the inhabitants of the American continent.

Both God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ are physical beings who have the form of a man. 6 feet tall? I have no idea.

We're supposed to keep the Sabbath Day holy by doing only those activities that will bring us closer to God and spiritually enrich our lives. Most professional athletes who are Mormons decline to participate in competetive sports on Sundays. I'm pretty sure that Steve Young used to play football on Sundays, though. Someone who knows for sure can correct me if I'm wrong.

Mormons can swim all they want.

By the way, where did you get this information anyway -- the online equivalent to the National Enquirer? And why did you put your thread in the debates forum? Did you want the facts or just a good argument?

The movie Religulous, Mormons that I know, the ones that knock on my door when I'm trying to watch TV/eat dinner. I put it in debate because I figured already that some of the "facts" are disputable so I probably shouldn't put it in DIR. Genuine curiosity though. Thanks for your answers.

Actually, with respect to the ones who knock on your door when you're trying to eat, you're in luck: The LDS Church recently announced that missionaries are going to be doing a lot less door-to-door proselytizing from now on and are going to be finding potential converts via the internet, etc. instead.

    Any reason why? :)

    Will door-to-door/travelling still continue?

They'll probably continue to do door-to-door proselytizing in some areas and under certain circumstances. This article more or less explains the new policy. Knocking on doors has long been recognized as perhaps the least effective way there is to find potential converts, and the Church is becoming well-enough known that in many parts of the world, the missionaries don't have to look that far for people who are interested in learning about it. Most converts these days are the result of referrals from members of the Church whose friends have expressed an interest in learning more.

That's wonderful news. Now if you could just get the Jehovah's Witnesses to hop on board...

What do you mean? They're the enemy, after all. We want you to like us better than you do them. :D

That's already a given. My mother's father's side of the family are pretty much all Jehovah's Witnesses. I can't go to visit without one of them trying to "save" me. I love my family and all but it's maddening.

I've never actually met a Baha'i. Is there an area where there's a large concentration of them in the US?
