It is also illegal, at least in the US, to discriminate based upon sexuality. So there goes that argument.
Merely saying you are against SSM is legal. Yes, I'm discriminating. I'm saying only straights have the right to marry. Boo hoo. It's still a legal position to hold and religious institutions are allowed, in the UK, to deny SSM as well, ergo so am I. What should be taught in schools is the basic 'Some folks support SSM and others don't.'

Because that's the reality.

So why don't we just teach reading, writing and arithmetic as school instead of personal viewpoints?

Well, there was no indication that he was actually "teaching" it. I don't think his issue was with having to take the flag down. The flag is more a peripheral issue. It was the letter that they made him sign that caused him to resign.

Because we also need history, science, civics, economics, government, and other bits of info that go far beyond the absurdly dated idea of the three Rs.
please stay in context of what the thread is about.

Voicing an opinion and belief is not the same as discrimination. All the negative things I believe and say about Christianity, it is all perfectly well within my rights. However, when I had a position of authority at work what would be illegal is treating Christians differently than non-Christians and consistently assigning them crap jobs and cutting them early.

That 'be proud of who you are even if you're not straight' is seen as political and deserving of religious reprisal is just another reason religious conservatism needs to die like the decrepit old cantankerous bump on a log that it is.

I got this one mixed up with another case.... sorry. Still not sure if the context really was necessary.

Yea, it is written in the Book of Cyril...
The problem is that they shouldn't feel unsafe in the first place and shouldn't need flags to make them feel safe. I never felt unsafe being an open bisexual at school and I wasn't. So this is clearly another issue, I think.
And your experience can be extrapolated to everyone, can it?

It really does. It won't be happy until it has taken over, booted evolution out of school, actually makes the 10 Commandments law, and making us all pray to Jehovah. They don't respect American values, they generally don't respect rights for others when it goes against their religion.

Yeah that's a patriotic thing, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Afaik it's also opt-out.

I'm also not an American so it's not my problem.
Our pledge was hijacked by the Christian fundies mid-20th century when they had "under god" added for no other real reason than to create another obvious division between the USA and USSR.
As Americans, we should ideally be loyal to the ideals of our Constitution in regards to what it means to be patriotic. Not to a god or man. Christians made it about their god.

So not pictures of spouses of straight people either then.

You are trying to employ Ostrich Defense. That doess not have a history of working well.

The problem I see is that the LGBT flag represents a political position, a liberal position that's generally associated with leftist political parties and is itself a political statement. State run institutions, such as the police and NHS should not be partisan in any way. Acceptance of gay people isn't the issue, it's the LGBT movement and what it's associated with - nowadays that also includes anti-capitalism, pro-communism and so on. It's not a neutral position that's just 'acceptance'. Many gays and trans folk do not associated with it at all. It's a very specific political group.
The basis of your argument makes sense in a certain sense. But your interpretation of what a gay pride flag means is very right wing, and generally not accurate. Banning a flag isn't going to correct the false interpretations of the flag.

I'll say that I agree in some sense that symbols in schools are ideally not appropriate, but in another sense we are seeing a great deal of prejudice against marginalized people, including schools, and the presence of these symbols could be good for those who are being victimized in a school setting. I think schools need to be an inclusive and open environment, and be open to discuss the confusing feelings the young might be having. Being a closed and stale environment won't help students learns better social skills.

Flags that puts focus on one group such a gay pride, religion, blm, etc shouldn't be in a class room in my opinion.
None or all

Schools aren't the place for this kind of thing tho, and I don't see lots of discrimination in schools. It's likely this is a US phenomenon. I was at secondary school in the early 2000s and there was little discrimination. Sure there was childish bullying, but that's always going to happen. Honestly you ned thick skin to attend any school; it's just the way kids are. School's job is to educate, not therapy. It's the parents' job to raise their kids right and to socialise them properly.
