Be your own guru
They are following their tradition. At times problematic when people so designated resign from their responsibilities. But I think in Tibetan Buddhism that is not considered a crime.

From an early Buddhist perspective ... if they were formerly human, and truly found themselves reborn as human (repeatedly), then they could only have been mildly virtuous in their former lives, and, at most, a sotapanna.

What do YOU make of it?

Tibetans have been recognizing reincarnate lamas for one hell of a long time.

They start them young. My guru was recognized at an early age as the eigth of his line. He's an exceptional teacher.

My favorite still has to be Gesar Mukpo, the son of Trungpa Rinpoche. Sadly he doesn't teach and doesn't accept students.
