I have some 5K bookmarks collecting for years, and the following link is a gem I'm sharing with you which will let you
examine militaries of all countries around globe, you can also use it to compare countries or groups of countries against other group:

Global Firepower - 2022 World Military Strength Rankings

Also if you wish to see various military tech and compare their capabilities:
Military Factory - Global Defense Reference

Does it assess qualitative differences or only quantitative?

And is this to cheer us up or to depress us?

It's all about the money.
Indeed, economy is important factor to wage wars.

Does it assess qualitative differences or only quantitative?
quantitative, it deals only with numbers.
Nuclear weapons are excluded from calculation, only conventional.

And is this to cheer us up or to depress us?
Why would you be depressed?
I find the site useful for fact checking since news are biased these days.
only downside is that update is done on yearly basis from what I see, and there is no historical data.

I'd rather governments spent money on useful things, and where spending on nuclear weapons is more or less backing the end of humankind, given that it is probably as likely that they will be used again as not.

But then the site seems to concentrate solely on conventional weapons - but even this isn't guaranteed these days. Putin :eyes:

Duh.
One country wants to take the economy of the other.
The other wants to keep their economy from being stolen by thugs.

Of course, there are other motives often at work.
