Military Awards

I was going through some boxes, and doing some sorting and unpacking, when I came across my Ribbons and Medals from when I was in the Navy.

I figured I could share them here, for any that might be interested in this sort of thing.

Feel free to ask me questions, or ignore me.

Do you have any old military stuff lying around your house? It doesn't have to be medals or awards.

I've also got the 25mm expended casing.

And this 5" expended powder charge (I use it as an umbrella stand).

I don't know what any those ribbons or medals mean. I'm tempted to ask what they are for but it looks like a lot of them so feel free not to tell me.

Did you walk with a list when you wore all that decoration?

I am not into military stuff but it looks kind of impressive.

With those medals a little bit yeah :p.

Good thing they aren't standard daily wear.
Typically the ribbons are worn, but not Medals.

I used to have a sack of artillery ammo pellets (they come in round sacks and are meant to stay in the sack), but I felt guilty for having it (and frankly, it's also a little dangerous). I found it during a training exercise. It had been left behind by a different artillery unit. Anyway, eventually I got a friend to return it to a base that had an artillery unit in it.

But I still have other stuff - my beret, my tags, my unit pins, bullets (used and unused), etc.

I still have one of each of my two dog tags and name tapes from when I was conscripted. Sometimes I look at them as a reminder that difficulties will pass no matter how challenging they may be to me.

Not the worst souvenirs I could have gotten from that period of my life.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I still got my old uniforms, and my citation from an army vs marine wargame at 29 palms in the Mojave Desert.

A corporal and me got an entire tank column jammed up into a long gully with no exit. *grin*

Army won that game and the entire base got a day off!

Depends. In the Army for instance you have your Battalion ribbons on the left and your personal citations/qualifications on the right breast of your class A dress uniform.

@The Hammer. Your achievements are awesome. Thank you for your service and congrats on your achievements.
I didn't post about my uncle to in anyway take away from your achievements.
My uncle taught me a lot, had a lot to do with my life decisions and he was a bad ***. So I share about him when possible.
That was from his obituary.

I appreciate, but this wasn't really meant as a gloating thread by me anyways :p, so no worries about bringing up your Uncle. He really does sound like he was a ******! I had to brush up a bit on my history (Hamburger Hill was ringing a bell), he was a strong man to go through all that.

Tough as nails, I'm sure. :)

I think I would certainly have a different outlook on things if I was conscripted. And I try to keep that in mind when I can.

Thank you. :)

They only told you that you won to make you feel better.

Funny thing is, a specialist in my platoon told me not to get too much of a swelled head over the citation. He said they are pretty much a dime a dozen and we went to his dorm where he pulled out a bottom drawer where it was chock full of citations he received, and it was as thick as a Stephen King novel!

Now I look at it with a wonderful sense of nostalgia more than it's worth at that particular war game.

Those were the days. *grin*

What did you have to do to get the medals?
ps well done

They are all a little different but nothing too crazy. The top left is a Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal for completing a qualification with my team in less then half the time it normally takes. Next one going right is a Good Conduct medal meaning I didn't do anything stupid to get in trouble for a minimum of 3 years in a row. Next over is for enlisting in wartime (National Defense Service Medal). The last top row one is for participating in the Global War on Terrorism (I deployed to the Persian gulf). Bottom left medal is the Korean Defense Service medal (I spent over two months assisting the Korean navy with their training and operations). The purple/blue one next to it is a Humanitarian medal which was earned by helping out during the 2013 Tsunami and Earthquake that hit Japan. The last two are Expert marksman medals for both the M16 and 9mm pistol.
