The method, sola scriptura, you're using is correct in and of itself from how you're debating. The problem comes from the common grounds upon which debates must stand... you cannot argue one point using two or more different methods. And that's why you're off limits from certain debates (I think Ceri's use of 'any' was a bit off (Don't hate me! ;))).

Controversial means for a controversial topic only makes things complicated.
