Nothing my eye, Something for sure
What kind of mediocrity are you talking about?

What would be the very best choice to make?

It may not be a matter of choice; perhaps it's a natural thing. Just like with ballplayers - some do exceptionally well, others not so well but good enough to make the majors, then there are those who never make the majors, but they were still better than anyone on their high school team. If they could have been, they would have been the "best," but for whatever reason, they couldn't cut the mustard.

Is that something that's chosen, or just the luck of the draw?

Even if everyone was striving to be the very best, it seems that there would still be those who would be relatively "mediocre," even if they did their absolute best. There are only a few open slots for "the best" in any field, and competition would obviously be fierce.

On the other hand, mediocrity might be preferred for other reasons. Being "the best" means that you'll be facing many upstarts and challengers who want to knock you out of the top spot. Or you might face resentment and jealousy.

Mediocrity brings anonymity, and some people might prefer to be the nameless face in the crowd for any number of reasons. Then you're just the average Joe, just one of the ordinary, average guys.

Have you read Nietzsche at all? His conceptualisation of the Ubermensch would seem appropriate here, although I suspect it would fly in the face of what your intent is, if I'm discerning correctly.

No one must not choose mediocrity: one must be perfect and infallible in one's undertakings. That leads to salvation.

how about we focus to the push and shove at heaven's gate?
I don't think anyone has any idea what you're talking about but they're too polite to say. You'd need to explain your topics more clearly if you want any meaningful responses.

For me it would depend on context.

For some things, I'll just keep coming and coming and... to get it absolutely perfect.
For other things "good enough", is good enough.
For even other things, I simply do not care either way.

indeed....

and as we approach heaven's gate......with so many beside us....

will the gate open for all?

I think not
I believe the peace of heaven is guarded
and some means of choosing will be dealt

do you think you stand out?.....with soooooo many numbers surrounding you

It stands to reason that first one must survive this Earth with ones infallibility, that is the only heaven that exist which must be attained. To do that one must bring Heaven on Earth.

are you paraphrasing a line from the Lord's Prayer?

Thy will be done.....on earth....as it is in heaven

Quite so; let me explain: it is understood that God lives in Heaven. We need to bring Him down to Earth to sort out all the ills of humanity first before we contemplate an after life in Heaven proper. This can be done because with one's infallibility that we strive to attain we effectively become God in a human form living on this Earth. Whatever we do is then divine.

well....I can't agree....

God can shame the best of my efforts.....on my best day
with the least of His own
any day

but we might shake hands on bringing heaven to mind and heart
and then trying to make that work in this world
even as this world is in pursuit of it's own way

Have you considered surrendering your free will to God?
