Masturbation

Some say masturbation is a form of adultery, is sinful because of the sexual fantasies it generates, a form of impurity and uncleanness, is addictive and a misuse of sexuality, is against natural law and/or is a violation of God's purpose for sex.

What do you think?

It doesn't cause harm under most circumstances, so there's nothing morally wrong with it at all. Plus it's fun.

I dont see anything wrong with it because it doesnt cause someone to commit adultery.

Adultery-
Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a partner other than the lawful spouse.

If masturbation is a form of adultry, is having sex with your current boyfriend commiting adultry on you future husband?(if not the same man)

Not only will I say that is is not harmful, addictive, a cause of adultry OR adultry itself, or against God's or natural law (in my opinion the same thing)... I will actually go so far to say that it is actually HEALTHY. It relieves sexual tension, prevents some teenagers from seeking other teenagers to explore sex (which could cause STDs or pregnancy), and helps relieve normal stress. All good things, in my opinion!

I think maybe the reason it's a "sin" is because sex, according to the Bible and Christianity, and some other religions too, is purely for procreation purposes. Women are not supposed to enjoy it. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s women who actually wanted sex were committed for being mentally ill. It brought about the invention of the vibrator - to releave women of their unnatural tension. I don't want to bring this up - but it's also the main reason behind Female Genital Cutting in some cultures.

And I even heard somewhere that a man masturbating is a form of murder, cause he's spending all those little guys and not getting someone pregnant.

But hey, there's a little Hedonist in all of us, do what feels good as long as it doesn't hurt someone else. :)

if a man does not masturbate he will be ill later in life....ask a doctor

recent studies also have concluded mass masturbation by men from ages 18-35 I think...prevents prostate cancer later in life

Masturbation is healthy...physically and mentally

Hi All

I don't know, to me it is not the act that is sinful, but more what one think's about when performing the act! Think about it, when you do that sort of thing, you are not thinking of washing the floor or bringing out the trash, or at least I hope not,

Well, you're not thinking about those things when you're having actual sex, either... atleast I hope not.

I'm sure some people masturbate and think about someone other than their partner, but there are people that have sex with their partner while thinking of someone else too. One is worse than the other, tho. If you're with your partner, you should be focused on that... when you're alone... think about whatever you want. The showerhead ain't gonna tell.

I've read in a medical article that orgasms while on your period can help ease cramps and aid the flushing out of the uterine lining, and there aren't many women who want to have sex during that week, so masturbation seems like the better treatment.

But it's just like anything else, in moderation it's healthy, to excess, get a wrist brace and stop watching porn. :)

Masturbation should be recommended, especially to young people, as a way for them to get to know their own bodies. Without proper training, they will have difficulties in acquiring a satisfying sex life later on in life.

I do not believe in any heavenly thought police, so there cannot be any sin involved, regardless of any thoughts during the process. If I had to come up with a definition of what I personally might consider a "sin", it would probably be "an act, unnecessarily detrimental to another person".

Anders, I know what you mean of course, but I'm also an atheist, and I have found that it's helpful to stick to the definition of a sin as something that goes against the will of the god of such-and-such a religion, reserving your definition of sin for an 'immoral act' instead. It is in fact sinful to masturbate if you're a Christian, but (usually) not immoral for the atheist. Sins involve assuming that God knows best; morality is about our rational understanding of good and bad - two totally different ways of seeing the world with profound implications. Trying to find the degree to which the two can be reconciled is one of my favourite religious 'quests'.

While I don't think masterbation is bad, this logic doesn't work too well for me... men can rape women (and technically women can rape men...) and humans can murder each other... does this mean that the creator made it possible because it was meant to happen?

Alaric,

I have not bothered to try to find published facts and opinions, but I strongly doubt that all Christian denominations consider it a sin. There is nothing in the Bible that can be interpreted as a ban (unless you twist it out of proportion).

Painted Wolf,

Good point! After writing that exclamation, I realised that it can be used as a defence for criminal actions as well, but I still go for it.

Runt....

I hate to put it this way... but who says creator didn't mean for those things to happin...
As much as I disagree with both rape and murder they are personifications of our darker sides. You can not have good without evil.
Getting back to masterbation in the same line of thinking... we can hurt ourselves as much as we can make ourselves feel good.
Many other animals masterbate... its natural. I have a dog that is way to fasinated with it....
He starts to "chase his tail" and then OOPS he misses and down he goes.... It makes it awkward to have company over ;)

Does that mean that one should steal, murder, commit adultery, etc? We are able, but the creator does not wish us to CHOOSE to do these things.
