For my first 16 years, my fear was spiders. I overcame fear of spiders in less than 24 hours. Never had the slightest trace of arachnophobia since. Overcoming fear of marriage isn't so easy. The marriage between my mom and Dad was such a disaster that Dad kidnapped us after mom won custody. It is nearly 30 years later and they hate each other. Mom and Dad were Polar opposites. My earliest memories were mom and Dad fighting.

It left in me a deep seated fear of marriage which only was more fueled as every sibling's marriage turned into a disaster.

As Sherman said "War is Hell", I'd go so far as to say "Marriage is hell" from what I've seen.

Still, I wish you a happy marriage!

Yes it can be, Matt. But sometimes it is a good kind of hell. It is more of a challenge and test I would say

I can say with 50 years of marriage to back me up, that marriage does not have to be a disaster. My wife and I are more in love today than we were when we got married. And I know others who feel the same.

It is true that marriage can be hard work. And it's true that some are not suited for marriage. But some are.

    You lucky *******!

I'd give anything to have a marriage like that. To have the passion continue 50 years later with a flame burning even brighter with.... All the memories... All the experiences... The children.... The lessons learned.... You lucky son of a gun! :)

I personally came to the point where I didn’t need anyone, a relationship, and would have been completely content and serene going solo, and even abstinent for the rest of my days. Then the perfectly imperfect one naturally and effortlessly crossed my path. Haha. But even then, we don’t even view ourselves as ‘married’ or each other’s possessions, and are perfectly content and serene in our partnership.

From what we observe around us, ‘marriage’ seems like hell for most unfortunately.

Some are bad, turn out disastrous, and even worse if kids are involved and i feel deeply for all the hurt that comes out of a failed marriage.

But marriage is a word, not a sentence

Some are what its all about. The last 24 years of my life have, for the most part been pretty good.

Its a lottery with a roughly 50/50 chance of winning or loosing.
