Mark of the Beast verses Seal of God

The MARK OF BEAST is shown in the following verses:

Revelation 13:16
He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,

Revelation 13:17
so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

Revelation 14:9
A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand,

Revelation 14:11
And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."

I was actually speaking with some devout Christian friends of mine about this yesterday,

Historically if you did not make offering to the emperor did not receiver an Libellus which was a certificate that allowed for trade in Rome, thus people without this "mark" could not trade

Don't you think it made sense for John to write to people about things they would understand?

Prophecy doesnt work that way, it has support in what symbols and descriptions are used, but since it is coming and future events the writer in this case John had to write a description of what he saw, and not necesarily one that most of the readers would recognize completely. But God unveils the prophecy to his faithful as time goes on and they see what it is refering to.

I don't see how you know that the prophecies have not been fulfilled, Nero and his successor seem to fit the Archetype very well, but who would you say the beast is?
