California man made 10,000 harassing calls to government offices, officials say

You'd think they'd go after him after 1000 or so calls, but they waited until he made 10,000 before arresting him.

I'm just kind of mystified that someone would make that many phone calls to rage against the government.

If I was going to call, I'd just ask them if they had Prince Albert in a can.

I just did a quick calculation. If he did a call every 2 minutes, for 8 hours each day, that would give 240 calls a day. Let's round up to 250 calls per day. That would take 40 days to make 10,000 calls.

This, of course, assumes he is doing this as a full-time job. Although I can see how a slow moving government might take 40 days to get together enough to arrest him.

What's the cost of a local call in California?

I guess it would depend on what kind of a plan he has, or if he's calling from a landline. I pay a flat rate per month and get unlimited talk and text to anywhere in the U.S.

But I think a lot of government offices have toll-free numbers, so he wouldn't have to pay for those.

I'm just curious as to what possesses someone to make that many calls. Did he start out slow, making one or two calls a day? Did he have any kind of actual grievance, or was he just some nut who liked to make crank calls?

What could the government possibly be doing wrong that would make someone use their telephone?

When I was a stupid adolescent we made random calls and asked if "Clem" was there. But normally a few would be enough to satisfy our juvenile sense of humor.

Worked at a government office that a guy started calling and threatening. Apparently someone who worked in the department would call for Chinese takeout, take it home, and when they were done, go stuff it in their neighbors garbage. The neighbor, being a bright fellow, noticed the garbage that was not his and pulled out a few Chinese takeout menus with the security department phone number on it (no one in security lived in that area) So being an intelligent fellow, he decided to start calling the number and threatening whoever answered. This went on for a couple weeks, until I got one of the calls. He was threatening as usual, ignoring the fact that he was talking to a different person, not believing he was talking to a state security officer, and spewing his usual (report) threats about coming down and dumping the trash and kicking my butt.....but he stopped talking when I said "Please, come down, I gave him the address, I would really like to meet you....of course, you'll be arrested for harassment as soon as you get here, but please, feel free to stop by anytime....or...and if you like, I can call the State Police to have them stop by and pick you up, since I do have your address and phone number (which I read off to him)....or you can stop calling...your choice" never heard from him again.

I'm not sure. Maybe somebody wrote their number on a wall: "For a good time, call 867-5309."
