The malware problem 'knowtvnow.co' is one of several malicious popup and notification apps that may try and take over your computer. I was a victim of this malware and it was very difficult to remove completely with normal google and Microsoft adjustments and antivirus software. It took me sometime to remove them with the help of McKafee software consultation when the regular software antivirus software failed to even see it.

My father in law likes to visit some websites. He gets infected quite often which became to much for me, so I told if he gets infected again, I will have to wipe out his computer and do fresh installs of windows.

He never asked me to help again.

Please use uBlock Origin. It blocks ads as well as many malicious sites and downloads, and speeds up browsing immensely -- and it's free. It's great for people who aren't very tech-literate since it doesn't require much user interaction -- you can just install it and forget it. Here's the link for Firefox and for Chrome.

Also, for anyone more tech-literate who has to deal with others getting constant viruses and whatnot, what I've done is install Linux Mint. If they don't need Windows-specific software, and a browser, Libreoffice, and such are all they need, it simplifies tech support a lot. Especially if they're the type that doesn't like to reboot their computers, since Windows inexplicably gets slower and crashes when it runs for too long.

You actually do not need to visit a shady site to get infected. Contemporary virus sneak in by way of relatively normal software and updates. The problem is recognizing the more subtle viruses that function like normal apps.

I believe it was picked up when I accessed a news and weather site that looked like a normal site. The popups began and it wanted me to change to some sort of platform other than google. I resp;ved that with difficulty, but the popups continued, and on occasion it tried force me to change away from google.

Learn how to use virtualbox and create a virtual machine. You can take a snapshot at any time and go back to that snapshot whenever you want.

Any 'dangerous' web browsing that I do tends to be in a virtual machine. if it gets infected, so what?

Whew for a minute there I thought it was McAfee antivirus. If it was, I'd rather had the malware.

I know how to use virtual machines but trying to teach that to my father in law is another story.

Okay, I have installed it. Now I will have to play with it, but probably not today. Thanks!

Understood. it is an additional step. You can create the VM yourself and then have virtualbox create an icon for it. If you have a Linux VM set to automatic login, it is a click on the icon.

Knowing my step dad, he's going to ask me to fix his virtual machine.
