What are lists of things, ideas, Xs, you will NOT budge on regardless how exclusive or inclusive you are about the world, people, and so forth.

Self dependence. If you can't take care of yourself, don't expect someone else to.

I agree. I know there are cultures, though I wish I travel to have first experience, where self-dependence is less important than group dependence. So, each person works with each other to survive as a unit. I talked with a friend like this years ago, born in the US but identify by her ethnicity and family culture, and found she couldn't live without her parents. So, when her parents pass away, she wouldn't know how to handle it cause they took care of her and she is responsible for taking care of them.

Do you think there is some sense to these values?

If you can't explain it to a 5 year old, you don't know second order partial differential equations as well as you thought.

I can explain it very, very well and clearly to a 5-year-old...but no matter how well I explain it, it is very unlikely that she or he would understand what I was saying...there are some things that the vast majority of 5-year-olds cannot understand...

Well if your were chronically infirmed you can hope someone else will go out of their way to help you, but you shouldn't expect it.
No guarantees in life. Even if someone does, out of the goodness of their heart, take care of you, something might happen to them.

which is why I'm glad I'm a member of a social species that regularly cares for its members, including the infirm...

That type of attitude. We were all completely dependant of someone else at some point in our lives and we will all be again at another. In a certain sense, we are never fully independant since we live we are social and depend largely on other for our mental and material health. Cooperation, intelligence, curiosity and adaptivity were the recepe of our success and flourishment as a specie.

And people still die from neglect. The young are abandoned and the old left to rot. There may not be someone around the next corner to save you. That's the reality of life.

I'm glad your glad but our species also regularly abandons its own as well. Our species regularly preys on its own. You may feel entitled but that doesn't mean you will get your wish.

    Self determination.
There are limits and exceptions but as a general rule I want to have the power to decide for myself and I want everybody else to have the same power.

When we come into the world we are dependant on others to raise us. Once we hit 16-20 we become pretty independent until we hit the elder years then we again become dependant on others.

The sad thing is the ones we were dependant on when we were infants/children, depend on us when they get old but too many aren't there for them when needed.

and part of the reason that happens, sometimes, is because of people who believe that everyone should only rely on themselves, and if someone thinks to help the young, old, infirm, whatever, then they deserve to suffer if it doesn't work out completely in their own favor to have helped...Get you own first, and then, in the magnanimity of your success, you MIGHT show pity on others...

    Just sayin'...

Yeah I kind of go for that.

    It's common sense.

You can't help others if you can't help yourself.

New Zealand is the worst country in the world, and also it doesn't even exist anyway. These are immutable facts.

so, being able to take care of yourself is either/or? Either you can or you can't? And being able to take care of others is also?

What we see most often is that most people need some help sometimes, and even though they need help, they are quite capable of helping others, even though they themselves need help.

    It's not an either-or...

So, what I expect to see, and do see, is that instead of everyone just looking out for themselves, I see mostly people trying to give help and get help, depending on human connections because we're a social species...

Now, sure, sometimes some individuals don't help others, and some don't get all the help they need...but that doesn't invalidate the idea that people do need help, and others should try to help...

    That reminds me of something.....
When studying engineering, we had many useful formulas
for things, eg, figuring out stress & strain in materials.
I didn't like using formulas handed to me, so I studied by
deriving them from fundamentals. Thus anything I knew,
I could explain. It came in handy a couple times when I
had to solve problems which were novel....not in the books.
    I didn't know much...but I knew it thoroughly.

Oh.....I have discovered over the years that something I
thought I knew, I really didn't. Trying to explain things
is where we find our limits.
