I have heard (though I can't find any primary sources) that there was some sort of backlash when Artscroll came out with its talmud because it provided too much explication and removed the need to learn how to learn and develop independent thinking skills among its users.
I am wondering if anyone knows of a parallel historical response to learning with Rashi who was (in a sense) the Artscroll of his time -- he provided definitions and context which removed the need for learners to break their own teeth.
Any historical info would be appreciated.
