    yeah.....sounds bad...
    it was
    but the dog lived

but from the officer's point of view......sure..
    small chihuahua
    barking aggressively
and the owner is warned......I will shoot

    He did.

so now the cop is the bad guy and everyone is all about the poor pouch

if it was me......my K-9 might have been called upon

or maybe the old field goal maneuver

    who's side are you on?

The officer should face criminal charges.

I posted a link to an article about this on another thread.
He shot the 10 pound dog in the jaw.
    Didn't kill it.
    It will need surgery.
The cop was just upset that the owner wouldn't come over to talk.

He has. That doesn't mean he should not face criminal charges.

Ah, the things you see when you don't have your twin .50 cals handy.

I would think the officer is going a bit overboard killing a yappy small dog, but some of those littler critters are psychos...

There's a video of the dog here....
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/

    And from.....
Police officer who shot a Chihuahua during a service call loses job, Arkansas sheriff says
A police officer, who is also a K9 handler, has been fired after he shot a Chihuahua after asking the dog's owner to speak with him.

Former Deputy Keenan Wallace was responding to a call on Friday, when he shot the small dog. Graphic video shared on social media that appears to be from from the scene shows an officer asking a man to "step to the road." At the time, two unleashed dogs appear to be barking in the yard. When he declines, the officer shoots the small dog in front of him. The dog can then be heard shrieking and rolling in the grass.

"I believe there were numerous opportunities to de-escalate the incident," Sheriff Tim Ryals said in a statement.

The dog, who goes by the name Reese's, suffered a broken jaw and shattered bones, according to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. While the dog will likely suffer longterm affects from the shot, he's expected to recover.

I don't think folks want a police officer around who feels the best way to solve a problem is by shooting it.

    Yep.

Perhaps if the dog had been a wee bit bigger, and did something other than 'bark aggressively?"

I have a 'cairnchi." A Cairn terrier/chihuahua cross. He's bigger than most chihuahuas, but not by much, and even if he went after someone with a full intent to bite (and he has...) he can't break the skin. He CERTAINLY wouldn't be able to do anything but slightly pinch through any sort of clothing or socks. He's a veritable weenie of a loud little dog. The measure of such things should always be the possible danger of the attack.

So...that officer should be disciplined, or fired. He should certainly have to pay the vet bills.

Oh, the charge? Sheer, unadulterated stupidity.

On the other hand, I would have shot a Rottweiler doing the same thing. Or a Great Dane...and I know how gentle they are, in general.

so the officer needs a weigh scale....to be sure he can take aim?
a legal limit is set in place as to what a threat might be?

sure......small dogs nip hard and that's about it
but if the mutt even so much as sniffed my leg.........PUNT!

and telling the owner to curtail his......cur.....
    can be ignored?

Thief once told me the story of how he got married...

He sent away for a mail order bride.
On the day she arrived at the train station, he hitched up his mule (named
Mule) to his buckboard, & rode into town. It took a spell, since Mule was slow.
There she was....purty as a picture, standing at the station with her luggage.
He loaded everything up as she climbed aboard, & they headed to his cabin.
    On the way.....
Mule made a wrong turn at a fork in the road.
    Thief: "That's one."
Later, Mule bolted when a rattlesnake frightened it.
    Thief: "That's two."
Almost home, Mule reared up when a horse fly bit'm.
    Thief: "That's three."
Whereupon Thief got out his pistol, & dispatched the mule.
Wife: "Oh, my God! What is wrong with you, killing that poor animal?"
    Thief: "That's one."

I don't want a cop who will shoot a chihuahua because he barks anywhere near me, my kids, my neighbors or anybody else. He lacks .....

    judgment.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want a cop who would NOT shoot a Rottweiler coming at him with teeth bared and mayhem obviously on his mind.

See, the problem with me is that I was bitten rather badly by a Dalmatian when I was very young. Still have the scars. Took me a good long time to heal, and a longer time to learn to NOT be afraid of every dog I ever saw.

I think I would have appreciated a cop who shot that dog before the dog chewed on me.

    (thinking)

Nope, I know I would have appreciated that cop.

I dislike small yappy dogs, but shooting the animal seems a bit OTT as it doesn't appear to have attacked the officer.

The frightening thing is some officers clearly act according to protocol and procedure with a serious lack of Officer discretion in determining that a Chihuahua generally would not pose a serious danger to life and limb.

Most officers I think would call Animal Control and threaten to have the dog captured and taken to the pound if the owner remains un compliant an uncooperative.

Officers that can't think situations out properly shouldn't be on the force much less carrying firearms.

It makes me wonder now if the police department has a college degree requirement for its officers. Some don't which is the scary part.

And even if attacked, a swift kick would
    be more reasonable than shooting.
What the incident tells me is that this guy
is too eager to kill anything or anyone.
He shouldn't be a cop or even carry a gun.

This dog is bigger than a Chihuahua:

The problem isn't just the size of the dog, it is all of the facts surrounding the incidents.

Police kill dogs at an alarming rate. In some instances they may be justified, in other instances they are not. I expect police officers to be trained in 1) environmental awareness 2) managing stress 3) not employing deadly force.

We can all call B.S. when the officer claims he felt he was in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm when a Chihuahua is the supposed genesis of such a fear, but when the dog is a little bigger it makes it okay and we should take the officers word?

I would like to see fewer dogs killed by police, regardless of their size.
