    I have found that there are three keys to my personal happiness in life;

    1. Always have something to work towards, a life goal.
    2. Have someone/something to love.
    3. Have something to look forward to.

What keys to happiness have you found? :smileycat:

I agree with the first one.

    1. Have a life goal
    2. Live within a community of more than mutual support and love
    3. Be comfortable with life and death
    4. Seek to understand and live the nature of life and our nature
    5. Be holistic and one with our environment and people within it

Hmm. My list would look very different. As I think about this now, I don't think it is even a list, it is simply one rule:

    Have appropriate expectations

Unhappiness is always caused by having inappropriate expectations. And the number one inappropriate expectation in humans, it seems, is born of anthropocentrism. Instead of honoring and celebrating the universe and its aspects for precisely what they are, humans demand things be something other than what they are (because the universe should totally resolve around us, apparently), and upset themselves when things inevitably fails to conform to those expectations.

It's funny, but I'd consider having a life goal to be an inappropriate expectation. Pressure to have one's life mapped out or some life goal is very, very stressful. When I let go of all that crap, I became a lot happier.

I agree with this, it is known as the "balance factor". Sure think big and have high expectations for yourself, but also be prudent; set realistic goals in accordance with a true understanding of your talents, skills, and limitations. Be aware though that you may very well surprise yourself by exceeding your initial expectations and transcend beyond what you and others first may have thought was improbable.

I agree with all of those and can only think to add accepting myself to the list.

    These verses
"You heard that it was said: ‘You must love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ However, I say to you: Continue to love your enemies and to pray for those who persecute you,"

Always have something to hate. I thrive on hate and I always need something or someone to hate. That isn't to say that I don't think love is important, though. I just feel like I always need to have something to be pissed off about or else my life is boring.

I could never love my enemies, but depending on the severity of the wrongdoing a person perpetrates against me in some cases I could forgive them, but I will never forget.

Me personally, I do honor certain so-called "Christian" principles such as "honor thy mother and father", and initially when dealing with other people "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Of course there are always exceptions to the "rules" determined by the individual's good judgment and circumstance, and sense of justice.
