Japan Unveils 3,000-Ton ‘Big Whale’ Submarine Amid Tension With China

Japan on Wednesday unveiled a new naval submarine amid flaring tensions with China. The 3,000-ton Taigei, or big whale, built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. will be put into service by March 2022, Kyodo News agency reported.

Manned by 70 crew members, the Taigei will be 22nd vessel in Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force’s submarine fleet. It will be 84 meters (276 feet) long and 9.1 meters (30 feet) wide, costing Japan around $720 million.

The vessel’s announcement comes amid tensions in the East China Sea, where Tokyo blames Beijing for violating the country’s territorial waters.

Japan said Chinese coast guard ships entered its territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea last Sunday, only leaving the area Tuesday night after “a record length of time.”

The Japanese Coast Guard said the Chinese vessels remained in its waters for 57 hours and 39 minutes — exceeding the previous record of 39 hours and 23 minutes set in July.

China claims the Japanese-controlled islands, which it calls Diaoyu, and routinely sends its warships to the surrounding waters.

Under these increasing tensions, Tokyo aims to increase the number of its submarines from 16 to 22 as part of its 2010 National Defense Program Guidelines. Currently, Japan runs nine 2,750-ton Oyashio-class submarines and 11 2,950-ton Soryu-class warships. It plans to add a 12th Soryu-class submarine next year.

It appears the U.S. isn't the only country having difficulty with China these days.

'Immediately stop': China's warning to US after destroyer stand-off in disputed waters - NZ Herald

A somewhat related story about a U.S. destroyer which was surrounded by Chinese vessels and aircraft while traversing the South China Sea. The Chinese are claiming it their territorial waters, although the International Law of the Sea (which China is a signatory) states that it's international waters.

Beijing is doubling down on its assertion of total control over the South China Sea, swarming warships and aircraft around a US destroyer as it sailed through international waters at the weekend.

"We urge the US side to immediately stop such kind of provocative actions, strictly manage and control its maritime and air military operations so as not to cause any eventuality," a Chinese military spokesman warned.

The guided-missile destroyer John S. McCain crossed through the South China Sea, passing near the disputed Paracel Islands, on Friday. It's the third such mission since June.

The warship's presence is part of Washington's ongoing "Freedom of Navigation" campaign to assert what it calls common practice. The post-World War II Law of the Sea determines the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait to be international waters.

Japan Unveils 3,000-Ton ‘Big Whale’ Submarine Amid Tension With China

It appears the U.S. isn't the only country having difficulty with China these days.

China and Japan have had trouble for many many years, it just got escalated over the islands when a certain US secretary of State (during a visit to Japan), who shall remain nameless, when asked about those island said they belonged to the Japanese.....I don't think this unnamed secretary of state had any idea about the dispute or what she had just done with the response

Right after that, things escalated exponentially.

Yes many are jealous from China as you can see nowadays Chinese products
are every where and very good prices.

Yes, although some countries have been worried about China's actions and the escalation of tensions. Not just the US and Japan, but also India, with whom they've had some recent border clashes.

Israel occupied the lands of Palestine and no body care and even getting the full support
of the USA, why if it comes to China then China is bad and actually China is not occupying
but believing that the lands belong to them the same thing for India believing the land for them,
this is not the reason that they hate China for, but because China is growing fast and no body
can stop them and they're afraid from the future as well.

I thought this had to do with whaling. I'm relieved it doesn't as I was about to go off. Lol.

I thought it was going to be something like this:

Could pair it with a Godzilla or something to scare the Chinese off.
