Jain deities?

May I respectfully point out that, regardless of what our Jain brothers may have to say on this matter, Hinduist and Buddhist roles for deities are very contrasting and depend, among other things, on the Buddhist school one chooses to analyse? :)

Thanks. Sorry disturbing the Jainism DIR.

I don't think we have many active Jains on here, unfortunately.
Have you checked the Wikipedia article on Jainism? It lists some things in "Core Beliefs" that may be of interest to you, but it does not go into much detail.

Jainism acknowledges the existence of powerful heavenly souls (Yaksha and Yakshini) that look after the well beings of Thirthankarars. Usually, they are found in pair around the icons of Jinas as male (yaksha) and female (yakshini) guardian deities. Even though they have supernatural powers, these deities are also souls wandering through the cycles of births and deaths just like most other souls.
Over time, people started worshiping these deities as well.
Not much information.

Does Jainism have deities like Hinduism and Buddhism do?

Just because deities are mentioned in these religions, doesn't necessarily mean that these religions place any importance on them. If there are deities in Jainism they are likely unimportant.

Cypress,

Many Jains not only worship Gods, but they worship them for knowledge and protection. But the Gods cant help you attain Moksha, because they themselves havent attained it and cant until they are reborn as humans. Yes, the Gods will die and will be reborn.

I am a Terapanth Shwtambar Jain and we dont worship Yaksha's and Yakshini's. We see no point, they cannot help us with liberation as they themselves are not liberated! Yakshas and Yaksini's are used for material things, like protections and such things. But they cant help one on the road to Moksha.

Jai-Jinendra!
