It's Finally Happening....The Language Purge

Over the years, I'd occasionally hear about some university
student discovering & being triggered by the terms "master" &
"slave" applied to technical things, eg, hard drives, cylinders.
(Felix The Cat was the first TV cartoon character. His nemesis
was "The Master Cylinder". I think he lived on the Moon.)

Well, I just heard on NPR that in the interest of avoiding increasingly
"woke" employees, companies are getting rid of such terminology.....
"Blacklisting"
"Slave cylinder", "Slave hard drive"
"Master cylinder", "Master hard drive"
"Male" & "female" connectors

Should we really go crazy, & also rename things
suggesting race, gender, religion, etc?
"Blackjack"
"Black hole"
"Master key"
"Mastermind"
"Masterful"
"John" (prostitute customer, toilet)
"John Marzetti" (school cafeteria offering)
"White noise", "White knight"
"White dwarf" (star type)
"White chocolate"
"White hot"
"Red hot"
"Red Hots" (candy type)
"Mary Janes" (shoe type)
"Jewish lightning" (arson for insurance money)
"Stevedore" (longshoreman)
"Sally forth" (to set out)
"Typhoid Mary"
"Chinese fire drill"
"Chinese water torture"

Suggestions....
"White" becomes "visible broad spectrum electromagnet radiation"
"John" becomes "happy ending customer"
"Black" becomes "light absorbing"
"Red" becomes "longer wavelength than orange, but still visible to humans"
"Infrared" becomes "longer wavelength than orange, but not visible to humans"
"Male" becomes "outie".
"Female" becomes "innie".

How far must it go to keep woke people from being triggered?
I need more examples!

Screw them. Im not revolving myself around oversensitive "woke" people.

If they can't tell the difference between a master cylinder and a slave master, it's their problem, not mine.

What? Me worry?
Alfred Hitchcock was keenly aware of this over sensitivity back in the 60's. In his movie "Psycho" he adamantly refused to label his main character, "Norman Bates", as "Master Bates"...or so a friend told me.

Because language has evolved since that movie,
Perhaps the character should now be Norperson Selfpleasure"

So let me guess you read that paper by that one guy at Havard and now believe that Cultural Neomarxists Are Coming For your language.

It is amazing to see a master thinker in action. Well done, I bow before your intellect.

Alternate terms have been used for quite a while; you just didn't notice:

Master/slave (technology) - Wikipedia

Would you really be lost if someone used "primary/secondary" instead of "master/slave?" How about "control cylinder/actuator" instead of "master cylinder/slave cylinder?"

Sure, this change by itself doesn't mean much... but if you're unwilling to do even this small, admittedly token act, it doesn't suggest that there's any hope of you doing anything of substance for real inclusion or equity.

I can hear the conversation now:
"Hey, Leo, hand me that there 12 inch mill fatherless child..."

On offense, but this would not be a true representation of the said cylinders. Primary/Secondary implies that one might function without the other, maybe as a back up.

What the hell is "woke?" I keep hearing this grammatically improper term and it's the best I can do to just roll my eyes because it sounds moronic. And frankly, I'm not sure I want to know because it sounds like yet another snarl word some group came up with to bad talk some other group they don't agree with. That's the worst sort of new improper term.

As for the topic... meh? This isn't really new, and has been happening throughout history. Words have power, and controlling language controls culture. It's not new.

There are a very few reasons why someone might find 'black list" acceptable, and none of them are particularly attractive. Similarly, there are very few reasons why someone may find the "woke" phenomenon offensive and threatening, and none of them are particularly praise worthy. Perhaps the best response to the lamentations that inspire threads such as this comes from Bob Dylan ...

Come gather 'round, people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin'
And you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'
