All available indications seem to suggest that what used to be the Republican Party is defunct, that it is now just another subsidiary of the Trump organization. The few Republicans who stood for what they believed to be right have been purged, or resigned. The rest, the majority -- even the ones some of us felt could be trusted to know what is right (Mitt Romney) -- have caved, bowed, groveled. They are subservient -- it isn't a party any more, it's a group of sycophantic worshippers of a single individual. (Those last 3 sentences are my opinion, but that's what this poll is about, so you'll understand when I vote "NO.")

So, is the party of Lincoln now dead? Or is democracy in the United States dead? I think it must be one or the other.

Okay, most of you will realize I totally screwed up -- I asked one question in the thread question, another (and opposite) in the poll. And I have no idea how to fix it -- there might be a beer issue at play. The answer to the thread question should be the opposite of the answer to the poll question. Yes is No, in other words, in other voices, in other rooms.

Still, might be a good test of the cognitive abilities of members -- so let's see what happens.

This thread looks like a complete waste of time. It is pretty obvious you have complete disdain and misunderstanding of the GOP and no genuine interest in changing your opinion. There would be no incentive for a GOP supporter to be here. You might as well name the thread “GOP supporters enter for free abuse and insults”.

Parties evolve, and the GOP is doing exactly that. So...is the party of Lincoln dead? Basically yes. Just like the party of Jackson is.

Do I like where the GOP is heading? No...but that's a different question.

Can you name any measurable planks in he GOP platform? "Measurable" leaves out platitudes like "family values".

I don’t think you understand the purpose of a party platform. A platform’s purpose is to promulgate the principles, priorities and policy stances. Not the specific (measurable) goals to attain those. But if you want more insight to the GOP platform here is a link to the 2016 platform (the 2020 convention being disrupted by Covid), https://prod-static-ngop-pbl.s3.amazonaws.com/media/documents/DRAFT_12_FINAL[1]-ben_1468872234.pdf

"Dead" implies a sense of permanence which I don't believe is true. We're still having an election this coming November, and there's still one slated for 2024 (not to mention some state and local jurisdictions which might have elections in 2023).

And Trump can't last forever. I guess the real question is whether this nationalistic America First ideal has any real following or staying power that could last beyond Trump. If it's all about Trump, then his movement of followers would likely collapse or splinter, at which point any threats to American democracy (such as it is) would weaken.

If you supported the ethical side of the Republican party you would be applauded. If you support the unethical and corrupt side, you won't. Your response suggests you support the unethical Trump MAGA side.

Trump is Toast. Donald J. Toast.

But the rot started long before his involvement in the GOP, and it will take a lot more than just getting rid of him to clear it up.

No, the GOP is not “defunct”.

What is defunct is the minds of those who let themselves become so obsessed with politics that all they think about night and day is “the other side” of the political spectrum. This goes for Red as well as Blue.

There is a remedy for this condition. Sever your ties to everything that fuels this pathetic obsession. Take an extended break from social media, and from major “news” outlets. Detach yourself from your favorite media personalities and start thinking for yourself. Change the subject when people bring up politics. Get out of the house. Enjoy life.

Stop letting your politics define you. Stop perpetuating propaganda by regurgitating the opinions of those who do your thinking for you. You could be more than that. So much more.

The GOP now has reached it's final evolution. Republicans were always authoritarian. It's what made them strong. Policies and talking points were given out top-down and (most) members loved to be told what to think. The Trump cult is only their logical conclusion. One party, one goal, one leader. That doesn't make them defunct and as long as they get elected, they are still legitimated.

There are still some GOP members who are not bat-**** crazy who survived their primaries. One of the GOP members from my state did get primaried, but I'm not surprised at this as her district is where a cluster of the Proud Boys who like to descend on Portland, Oregon and cause mayhem live. The rest of the Trump-critical GOP incumbant members from around here made it through their primaries.

Which GOP? The socialist GOP of 60 years ago, or the Fascist GOP of today?
The GOP has changed, it's moved right. So have the Democrats, for that matter. The Left, on the other hand, has stayed pretty stable.
