Assuming that there is an afterlife, a heaven and a hell, is it possible to get there if we were sufficiently advanced? Could we build a rocket, go through a portal and end up in heaven? What would the implications be if we could move between life and the afterlife in this way?

If not, where are heaven and hell that they are not accessible? Is it purely God's will that we should not be able to do this or is there some other barrier that would prevent us even if it were not for God?

to quote Captain Barbossa, it's not getting to the land of the dead that's the problem, it's getting back.

we can get to the afterlife through natural means, death is natural, but living to tell the tale?

but even if we could move between the two, some people will still believe there is more beyond that level.

Well there must be some extra process that happens after or as we die that actually takes us to the afterlife and that seems to be unnatural since every single bit of us that is naturally identifiable clearly stays here on earth regardless of whether we are alive or dead. The bit that leaves is either currently undetectable or unnatural.

That is a really interesting point. I wonder if people in heaven are prone to that meme to the same extent that we are here?

Um.. duh? There is nothing (literal, figurative, real or imaginative) that is not "accessible through natural means".

Sure but you can't build a rocket to go into a book. Can you build one to go to the afterlife?

I believe we glimpse it every time we go to sleep and dream.

If we could go to this supposed place in this life, it would not be termed the "after" life.

well, i think our consciousness is detectable to a certain extent, cogito ergo sum and all that, but we can't prove what happens to our consciousness after our biological self has died - it is the 'what happens to that consciousness after death' that my belief in the afterlife is based upon.

i don't know, if i get there i'll ask them. don't expect me to come back and inform you though :p

I believe we can enter, or at least glimpse at the "afterlife" in spirit form. That is essentially what a near death experience is. And, physically we can hear or see things from that side (hauntings), but I am sure that it would be impossible for our physical bodies to go there. The afterlife is not a place, but more an alternate reality. The barrier preventing us from entering is our bodies. I believe a spirit can come and go at will, but they are energy, not physical. Our physical bodies are tied to this earth and this reality.

In the future, the military will have established a base on Phobos, one of Mars' moons. Here there will be secret experiments conducted in an attempt to develop teleportation technology. One of these experiments will go horribly wrong, creating a portal right to Hell itself through which the demons and souls of the damned spill through.

I would say only to the extent that (their) heaven is not all it's cracked up to be.

    Only takes a little knowledge

And when an astronaut goes 'up there' they all look forward to be 'back here'.

We in Heaven; as it is the one time, we can choose what we create; even our ever lasting life.

Simply to comprehend we in heaven and that we choose what we do, and that our after life is based on what we do; then in truth, to understand our every action is the life 'forever after' that we will live in beyond our period of choice.

then the implications are that each alive will be far more responsible for what they do!

They are both in the minds of mankind rather than a place; in which knowledge enables this fact to be known.

not God's will, but the eventuality or literally like evolution; many tangents until the truth lives pure.

the only barrier is complacency, ignorance and deciet associated with man/women; alive in the words and beliefs accepted in faith.

truth only works ONE way; nature (God) does not fib, people do

People always look elsewhere for their heavens/havens.

I do so as well. Far more often than I would like to admit.
I know the portal is right here within myself.
I have been through it before.
Yet all I seem to want these days is to be somewhere else.
    When I KNOW deep down,
all I need to do is BE where I am.
