Ah I see. But the whole point of that is that we CAN'T see God's "face". The reference to "face" means direct, close up, i.e. face to face. Whatever the experience is like, it would be too much for us.

Also see genesis 32:24

We could look at this as a metaphor, that this is about a men wrestling with problems within his own head or something, though ostensibly it is about a man, who is god, wresting a man . In a multilateral view, we might see that the metaphor and plain reality might have meaning.

Yes, it looks like a metaphor for some kind of spiritual struggle.

The reason for this poetic language is that we are not intended to draw a single literal conclusion about the information being conveyed. It is supposed to be recognized as complex and inexplicable. And thereby relatable to different people and circumstances.
