Is Atheism a Religion?

mingmty

Scientist
I think it isn't, atheism is the absence of a religion but it was necessary to name that thought because it would be a pain to say "I'm nothing, I believe in no religion" every time one asked.

Atheism Overview

Atheism is a nonbelief in all deities, including both the impersonal divinity of the cosmos, itself, and in the supreme Personal beings of monotheist beliefs all often referred to as being "God."

Etymology

The term atheism (French athéisme, from athée, meaning atheist, from Greek 'Αθεος, atheos, meaning godless : a-, without; + Θεός, theos, meaning god; it has Indo-European Roots) is formed of the Greek prefix α- (a-), meaning "without" or "not," and the Greek-derived theism (from Θεϊσμός, theismos), meaning a belief in a god. The literal meaning of the term is therefore "without belief in a god."

Definition and scope

Atheism is generally defined by most dictionaries and encyclopedias as the "denial of the existence of God or gods and of any supernatural existence." [1]
Some atheists [2] [3] distinguish between two variants:

Strong atheism is an explicit belief that there are no deities. (They may, for example, be considered an impossibility.) Such a position usually commits one to having, or at least allowing for, positive assertions about and explanations of the natural world which do not require a deity.
Weak atheism is a mere lack of belief in any deity. (One may hold that there is not enough evidence to support a decision, or one may simply not have a position). This is related but not equivalent to agnosticism, which affirms that a person cannot have firm knowledge of the existence nor the inexistence of any deity. Nonetheless the two terms are often used interchangeably.
("Weak atheism" as defined above is also referred to in some circles as "soft agnosticism" while "agnosticism" as defined above is specified as "hard agnosticism." Moreover, in the freethought tradition, strong and weak atheism are also called positive and negative atheism.)

Atheism is not necessarily synonymous with irreligion. There are religious belief systems including various branches of Buddhism including Zen,other systems such as Unitarian Universalism which do not require a belief in any deity. Members of theistic religious organizations could secretly hold atheist views, too. Additionally, a number of atheistic 'churches' have sprung up, as have religious organizations which allow atheists as members. The "pan-atheists" who call themselves Naturalistic Pantheists are one example, while Brianism is another.

Hey Ibrahim! Welcome!! :D

I guess when you get down to it , it's really a matter of opinion. Personally, I don't think of atheism as a religion but the definition in the dictionary does fit.

Religoin-n. The beiliefs ,attitudes, emotions, behavior, etc., constituting man's relationship with the powers and principles of the universe, especially with a deity or deities. [Maybe, if it was "powers OR principles" it might sound better, maybe.)

I think a lot of atheists object to atheism being called a religion ,or openly agreeing that it can be ,because ,if we do it's open season for theists to start the conversion proccess. I also think it might be a little bit of a realised or unrealised elitist attitude on the part of atheists(guilty). That doesn't happen here at RF too often but in the real world it can cause a lot of problems.:D

Atheism is no more a religion than theism is a religion. Both are just a way of thinking, basically, rather than religions in their own right. There are atheistic religions just as there are theistic religions, but a lot of atheists in the West are what would be called "spiritual, but not religious" if they were theists. They have the turkey, but none of the side dishes.
