The answer is yes. Psychology has replaced religion for many people, especially the Atheists. Psychology tries to explain and treat the ups and downs and the emotional and psychological problems of life through discussing neurosis and repressions. These lessons, into how to deal with unconscious things, give us a hint as to how answers, to deeper things, can be acquired.

Most of Modern Psychology is concerned with the ego. It attempts to self actualize people, so they can get the most out of their ego, but within the superego of culture. You learn to be at your best in your environment.

Religion tries to do a similar thing, but it tries to self actualize the ego in the context of the inner self; the primary center of the brain. The inner self is natural, DNA based, and based on our collective human nature. This is different from the specificity of any given cultural superego. The inner self is what all animals have and which controls natural instinct and regulates their consciousness in the image of their species. Human have an inner self, that is connected to our collective human instincts and propensities; human nature. This is where all humans have something in common. You can fit in anywhere.

The psychologist Carl Jung was among the first to go deeper than the strengthening of the ego within the realm of the superego. He asked the question; what comes after the ego is self actualized and is now the person is living within ebb and flow of life and stages of life. The original paradise of discovery and overcoming will not last, but rather one will be lost again, as the water of life flows under the bridge.

Jung felt that modern psychology was just not the end goal, but was just a primer for another more important journey of the mind. This second journey built on the first foundation of the ego, would address the collective unconscious which is the internal natural version of the superego of culture, common to all humans. If God created all natural things, then the inner self is closer to God, than is the manmade cultural superego.

This brings us to the goals of religion in the light of psychology; Theo-psychology. The symbolism of dreams and the command lines of religious mythology, stories and prayers all have connections to the collective unconscious and inner self. Religions deal with the inner man; the inner self, which is still in a natural state, like Eden. Adam and Eve lost contact with the inner self; tree of life, when they formed an ego based on cultural knowledge of good and evil; how to succeed in culture. In Theo-psychology, the goal is an inner self induced reboot; system restore or born again.

To do this you need to start with the cultural superego therapy to learn some of the skills that will be needed for the second journey of inner self discovery. There you learn from within. There are rewards of higher human potential, acquired along the way, often misunderstood by the superego cultures. Ego often tread lightly less they lose some superego adaptation.
